In the Directions portion of the Network Dataset, I am wondering if there is a way to use a single feature class for Landmarks, querying out features by attributes to set at different tolerances. I am trying to avoid having 4 feature classes that I have to use for different tolerances, and consolidate into one. Using 10.1

Thanks for the response, Robert. The information and graphics are useful. I will go ahead and give this a shot, but I think that it might be easier due to the nature of the barriers (multiple floors, multiple buildings) to assign the affected edges with an attribute that can be used as a restriction. This is a helpful workaround if just one building, or one level of barriers, but unfortunately I feel the query would be so lengthy it might be more work that it's worth. Still going to try it out though. Thanks for your continued help on this, we have been making progress. Eric

I am trying to implement 3D barriers from a feature class into a network using a model, but I can't seem to get the resulting barrier to appear on the proper three dimensional plane. The feature class that the barrier is generated from a 3D feature, and displays properly in ArcScene. Yet when I run my model, the barrier that appears in the route layer doesn't retain the 3D information. I need to have the 3D information, as I don't want to apply the barrier to all features just to the features on that specific plane. I have the barriers set up via a second "Add Location" tool, as a polygon barrier after the Add Location tool that generates the stops. Is there something that I need to set in the tool itself to retain the Z information from the feature class? I do not have "Use Network Location Fields instead of Geometry" selected. Below a picture of the problem. The green is the feature class, red is the barrier that is created after running the model. I should also add that I do not need the barrier to be extruded, or represent a three dimensional box or object, just that it needs to have the correct elevation. I believe you could use a "Calculate Value" before the extraction, and write a if/elif in it. Then, you could use the expression as a parameter (or setting a string as a parameter, and inline variable it as the expression) and it will appear in the dialogue box when the model is run. From here, depending on how you write the function you could have the user type "Yes" or "No" and work from there, I think. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//0017000000v8000000

I am trying to create a concave line (beziel or multiple straight-line segments) between two points. I have used the "Point to Line" tool successfully to get a straight line (red in graphic), and also buffered around a point and turned that into a polyline (purple in graphic). However, for my purposes I need a line that bends inward between the two points, not straight or outward (green in graphic). Each of this lines is being created at the intersection of lines, and there is an intersection point, if that helps. Essentially I want to bend the straight line inward, if only a small amount. I am hoping that a tool or series of tools will do this, as the dataset that I am working with is much too large to do by hand. Thanks, eric

For any interested parties, in order for NA Campus directions to output suitable directions as of 10.1, junctions must be connected with a line feature containing the RoadClass 11 attribute. This feature must have an arc (not bezier, just multiple points, not in a straight row).

Update: I have tested with putting in features attributed with RoadClass values of 11 and it still returns the same type of directions as listed above when using the NA Campus style. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

I have been working with the information discussed in this thread: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/76035-NA-Campus-directions-questions. and so far most of it has proved quite helpful. However I have been noticing something that I cannot figure out. I noticed the problem on a larger scale, so I have provided an example size version of the problem below. Basically, I've noticed that when I run the directions in Desktop it will give me something to the likes of this: Begin route Graphic Pick 1 - Graphic Pick 2 1: Start at Graphic Pick 1 2: Go north on Hallway Drive 33.1 ft 3: Turn right to stay on Hallway Drive 39.6 ft 4: Turn left to stay on Hallway Drive 39.9 ft 5: Finish at Graphic Pick 2, on the right Driving distance: 112.6 ft End of route Graphic Pick 1 - Graphic Pick 2 Each turn is indicated (turn left, turn right, etc). However, when I return the NA Campus directions, this is just written as "go forward". As you can see from the attached photo, it is definitely not just a straight line. The NA Campus output looks like this: Begin route Graphic Pick 1 - Graphic Pick 2 1: Start at Graphic Pick 1 2: Go forward through Hallway Drive 112.6 ft 3: Finish at Graphic Pick 2, on the right Walking distance: 112.6 ft End of route Graphic Pick 1 - Graphic Pick 2 These routes are attributed with a RoadClass value of 10. It appears that if a edge changes the "Name" value, it will return a turn direction, but if the name value is the same (ie. Hallway in this case) it will simply say to go forward, no matter how many turns. A graphic of the route used here is attached below. I have been successful in getting other portions of the network to work, but I cannot figure out why this is happening. My network is much too large (university campus exterior and interior walks) to create individual turn features, and I have seen the NA Campus return an actual turn-by-turn direction. Robert, This was incredibly helpful, and what I was looking for. This makes it easier to understand which attributes are necessary to get the NA Campus style to work as it appears it should from the resources.xml file. I'm going to try out these suggestions and hope it all works! Out of curiosity, is there a reason that this information isn't in the resource center or some other place? Thanks again, Eric

Robert, Thank you very much this is a great start. I am indeed working with multi-story buildings and have a separate feature class that contains all of the "transfer lines" (ie. the stairs and elevators between floors). I will work on using the RoadClass 10 and 11 to get those maneuvers to work, do you know if a point class could be set with a RoadClass attribute? Say, having doors as points rather than lines? It seems from the second half of your post that this is possible, but the first half indicates just lines. Thanks again for continuing to work on this, I appreciate it. Eric EDIT: I've also noticed that the distance instruction under each step (using NA Campus, distance set to feet) still instructs "Drive: 20 ft". Only at the end does it have the cumulative "Walking Distance". Any thoughts on this??

if it helps clarify my question, i want to know how to use direction manuevers such as these: <String id="campusManeuverEnter">{Go inside and continue forward} @campusThroughNames</String> <String id="campusManeuverTakeDoor">@campusManeuverDoor ({ on the } #DoorSide)</String> <String id="campusManeuverTakeDoorToHallway">@campusManeuverDoor ({ on the } #DoorSide) { and } #GoDirection @campusThroughNames @campusDestination</String> the same way that these are used (regular directions for the first, setting a RoadClass attribute for the second): <String id="ManeuverDepart">{Depart} ({ } #StopName)</String> <String id="ManeuverFerry">{Take} (@FerryName) { ferry}</String>

Robert, Thank you for your response. I am aware of how to get the directions to supposedly return in a pedestrian style by using the GP tool. My question is more about how to get the supposed NA Campus directions to output actual pedestrian directions. i.e. is a field with some sort of class attribute necessary to indicate a path is a hallway, so that the "hallway maneuver" is used. Does a point class with doors need to be a part of the network dataset so that it knows when to use the "through door" or "enter building". The problem is this functionality supposedly exists, but I cannot find anything aside from simply setting the style to NA Campus that indicates how to actually make it useful and work properly.

I've noticed that the resources.xml file has maneuver commands for Hallways, Doors, Buildings. I was wondering if there was some sort of "RoadClass" equivalent for the walking directions that needs to be put in the attribute table to be able to utlize these? I tried adding a point class to the network dataset for "Doors" to see if that would trigger something, but no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks, Eric

Turns out if you want the landmarks to be shown in the directions, you must use the geoprocessing tool found in Arc Toolbox>Network Analyst Tools>Analysis>Directions and set the style to NA Campus. The output directions will have the landmarks included. However now I am tweaking things to see if I can get it not to repeat the same landmark in each segment 4 times.
