Curious about what other educational institutions are doing with GIS to support campus planning, operations, and safety? Here's a brand-new article about the work thatLarisa Kruger and her colleagues have been undertaking for a number of years to bring GIS, CAD, BIM, and other enterprise systems together to solve key problems at The Ohio State University. The article is in the latest issue of ArcUser, GIS and BIM Provide Life Cycle Support for University’s Assets. They are a higher education campus-facilities GIS exemplar. Please share this story. Reach out to learn more.

As more GISers expand their use of the ArcGIS platform, ArcGIS Online is taking on greater importance, including apps such as Collector, Survey 123, the Operations Dashboard, and Story Map templates. A great way to do more with Online is to learn more. See the attached updated ArcGIS Online Training Guide. It provides an ordered pathway into the basics of ArcGIS Online, associated apps, and guidance on administering an ArcGIS Online organization. The training offerings listed fall into several categories: training seminars, web courses, videos, and instructor-led courses. Except for the latter category, the e-Learning training content is included at no cost with our licensed software. While instructor-led courses carry a fee, we have a 40% discount in place for education users. If you have questions, please email me directly or better yet contact Esri Training at (800) 447-9778 ext 1-5757 or gistraining@esri.com. Our training specialists also can help you identify learning pathways for other aspects of the platform, such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise. Keep growing.

Facilities managers and technologists on education campuses have a growing body of stakeholders that rely on access to information—from casual to critical—in a variety of ways. One way of communicating to a diverse array of stakeholders is via Story Maps using free templates that are part of ArcGIS, http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/. Story Maps are interactive digital documents that bring together text, photos, videos, and other media in a map-based wrapper that examine the world in its many perspectives from global to local. Attached is a brief document that points to a number of education campus-focused Story Maps. All of them tell stories that are easy to use, digest, and share (a URL). Here are few highlights. One of the newest examples that we have discovered is the University of Virginia’s Green Guide. Like the data in it? They have provided a download link which gives you a picture of the XLS data structure for the story map. UConn too has a similarly dedicated app where they have embedded video to help tell the tale of green infrastructure in greater detail. UMass-Amherst has created a simple way to share a decade of campus development, where stakeholders likely include alums, donors, as well as campus senior executives and others. University of Utah has used the templates to create campus tours and has then moved the user inside the university hospital providing a floor-by-floor visit. It’s also good to note that if you zoom out in this application, you discover that the hospital and its interiors (scale-dependent) are seamlessly connected to the university’s main campus basemap visible in the campus tours. Have fun examining these and the other user examples.
