Hi, I am an Italian student of GIS and for my thesis I have to study many points that must be interpolated. When do you think is better to use the inverse distance weighted and when the kriging and why? Can you answer as soon as possible, please, that I have to tell it to my professor tomorrow, please! Thank you Giacomo

Hi, I should send by email 3 idw I created, but I noticed that this kind of files generate many others type of files, as .adf, .xml, .aux and .log. It is very confusing for those who receive these files, to open in a correct way the idw I want to show them. Unfortunately I can't give these files to them by a usb pen drive, because they are too far from me. I created a map.mxd where all the idw I need to show are included, but I think if in the computer of the people who receive these files, there aren't all the files I have listed before (.adf, .xml etc.) they can't see anything. Another more advice, please: each one of these 3 idw are diveded in 6 agricultural yield classes (legend), from the lower to the higher production per hectare (tons/ha). My professor asked me to let understand the percentage of frequence of each class in each map. He just told me to use the spatial analyst extension, but he didn't tell me which spatial analyst tool (aspect, slope, hillshade, trend, etc.) I have to use for this purpose. I attach the 3 idw yield maps to let you understand better what I am talking about. Please, can you advice me which method do I have to use to know the percentage of frequence of each class in every map? Thank you very much. Giacomo

Ok, thank you for your answer. I've already use Idw for many interpolation, I know kriging is more precise, but I have many sampled point to interpolate, so I think in my case can be good also IDW. Thank you anyway for your help, sorry if you think you waste your time to answer me. Regards Giacomo

Hello, I am an Italian student of a Master in G.I.S. and remote sensing: I am going to discuss the thesis in 1 month and I'd like to know one important thing: because I am an agronomist, my thesis subject is one study case on precision farming, and I have to talk about why I have to use idw rather kriging, to interpolate many points about crop yield and tractor speed. In which case would you use idw rather kriging or vice versa? I'd like to attach my starting data, to let you understand what is better for my case, but the maximum extent of file attachments is too little in this forum. If somebody can give me an email address, I will send to him my data, if it is necessary. One of my professors adviced me to use idw, and I have used this tecnique for several data, but I have found much literature about precision farming where is used kriging. Because I have to use only one interpolation tecnique, idw or kriging, I'd like to know which is better to use in my case and why, please. I'm looking forward to hearing from you, as soon as possible, please. Thank you Kind regards Giacomo

Hello, I am Giacomo Rossi, a GIS student that is doing an traineeship in the Ministry of Agricolture of Malta, exactly at the plant health department, and I am going to show, during a seminar, the potentiality of ArcGIS for this department, which deals with entomology, nematodic, wood packaging material, micology, virology problems in the plants and consequently in the food. I've founded some case of study in entomology joined with GIS, as monitoring insects that damage the plant productions with pheromon traps, but for the other fields, as virology and micology, I didn't get anything on the web and in the bibliography that is possible to solve with GIS tecnology. Do you know some research done using GIS to solve micology, nematodic, wood packaging material, virology problems in agricolture? If I won't find any case of study in these fields, the chief of the plant health department won't approve the use of ArcGIS in the department, because she thinks that if GIS is only used for entomology, it is not convenient. I am going to do this presentation/seminar the 20th of July, so I need as fast as possible an answer, please, help me! Thank you

If I do as you wrote, it works! But I don't know why if I try to run IDW in my previous job, it didn't worked. Anyway, thank you, and I hope I won't have to annoy you anymore 🙂

Giacomo We need to see all the errors that the IDW tool throws. And could you zip the feature class and attach it to this thread? Thanks Steve Here the point features class 09 and 10. 08 I couldn't attached because the zip is too big, but 09 and 10 have the same problems of 08, so if you recognize the issues in those 2 shp, it will be the same in 08. This is the whole screenshot about the idw tool error: Thank you

Hello, I have some issue to create IDW for 3 point features classes, here what happens whan I try to make IDW for one of those shp: This is how IDW tool appears before I let it run (it's the same for the other 2 shapefile, it changes only the input point features, called 09 and 10): I created the field yield_sped in the attribute table and I chose type "double". The values in this field come from a division in the field calculator. Could be wrong for this reasons? Thanks

Steve Lynch wrote me in an email that the input feature is corrupt, so the IDW tool fails the analysis. I believe that it is subjected to the corruption when the IDW tool is running, because before I manage to open it in Arcmap...so what can I do to avoid the corruption? It's really annoying, the corruption is fault of the software and I can't do anything to prevent it. This is the screenshot that appears: I will write it also in the geoprocessing section of the forum because I need to solve it as soon as possible, although I understand everybody has to solve his own trouble

Set your workspaces to folders that don't contain spaces, yours do. Save the work outside of a geodatabase as well for now. I don't understand what you mean, where my folders contain spaces? Give me an example, please. My job is not inside a geodb, it's all saved inside a folder called mac2

Hello, I've installed on my notebook the ArcGis 10 demo version, and I need the IDW tool to make an interpolation analysis for my G.I.S. master thesis that I've to finish as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the IDW doesn't work for any of point data I have. Only the first I manage to create. It is not specified also which kind of error it is done: Can you help me, please?

Hi! thank you very much, you solved my problem, I didn't know I could enable the extensions in this way :)! But I think it should be written in the installation explanation, shouldn't it? By the way, I don't have the customer support number, or I don't manage to find it my pc. How can I concact it, if it is necessary?
