Ok. I found out from a colleague that your .sdwx file is actually ESRI's version of the world file. So maybe I was confused at the reference when I was saying her computer was not creating the world file. I meant .wld not .sdwx. Most other software gives it the .wld extension. So .sdwx is redundant... I have been around the block for long enough (since the late 1990's) to know that ESRI has tried every way possible to georeference a map.

So I think we solved our georeferencing bug. It has to do with the .sdwx file. If we were having issues with saving georeferencing where it would not produce an updated .sid.aux.xml file, we would export control points. Then we would check to see if it had a .sdwx file. If it did we would delete it. Sometimes it would require removing the .sid from the TOC and/or rebooting ArcGIS Pro because Pro would "remember" the deleted file. Then we would bring the "naked" .sid file back into Pro and start georeferencing again, but this time we imported the control points. The map popped up where it was supposed to be again. Save georeferencing and it creates a good .sis.aux.xml file. So what does the .sdwx actually do? We have been trading .sid.aux.xml files of maps we have georeferenced with each other. We all have the .sid files. We pair the .sid with the .sid.aux.xml in the same folder and open it with Pro and the map comes up georeferenced. Pro does not recreate the .sdwx file. The .sdwx seems redundant...

Sure. Maybe I wasn't clear. She wasn't producing world files. She was having the same georeferencing issue where it was not updating the .aux file. She started messing with the settings mentioned in the ArcGIS 10 desktop article I posted above. She thinks enabling the world file and disabling the world file setting fixed the issue.

Sorry, my internet has been out of commission for a few days. My georeferencing issue went away. But my coworker used this old thread to fix hers. Georeferencing Problem - Image disappears when using Update Georeferencing . She said she thinks it had to do with the World File option. And, yes, she realizes it was for version 10.2 of desktop not pro 2.5. She was methodically going through their suggestions. Applying a setting, rebooting ArcGIS and then testing georeferencing. If it didn't work she would back out of the setting and reboot ArcGIS. She got to the post where bmeyer3 suggests this: "Customize > ArcMap Options > Raster > Raster Dataset > and Un-check "Use world file to define the coordinates of the raster" It didn't work initially after reboot (well it creates a .wld file) and then she unchecked the world file option, rebooted and tried again and noticed the .aux file was updated properly! I still can't explain why 2 of our computers temporarily had the issue and it magically disappeared. It was not creating .wld files for us. P.s. I don't think my files were read-only. When you check the properties of .sid, .sdwx or the .sid.aux.xml files individually they are not read-only. But when checking properties of the containing folder has that weird black square inside the checkbox which means some files in the folder may be read-only? That is why I said something about that in the previous post. Thanks

I am having similar issues. It just started. I am running ArcGIS Pro 2.5. This started happening to one computer in our office months ago, then another earlier this week and now mine... Heres the sequence I always follow: Georeferenced a MrSID map, saved and then closed georeferencing in the toolbar. Outcome: My map immediately disappeared. It's there in the contents pane and it zooms to the right place when I zoom to layer. If I start georeferencing from the toolbar again the map comes back with the control points. If I clear my map-cache in ArcGIS Pro (which reloads the map file), the map is still in the contents pane, but when I zoom to layer now it goes back to Central America coordinates (as if I never georeferenced it). I think it has something to do with the aux.xml file... The sequence above made a 6KB AUX.xml file. All the rest of my good attempts at georeferencing make a 9KB file. Upon opening the aux.xml files with a text editor missing <SRS> and <GeodataXform information which includes the projection and control points. At first, I thought it might be a network permissions issue because with a colleague's computer in our office it wouldn't even create the aux.xml file upon bringing the map image into ArcGIS pro content panel. Then there were times when it would create the aux.xml. Then I felt like it would not update the information after georeferencing maybe because of permission issues? But now we are working from home and all the files are on external drives and it is still happening and now to more of us. So... HELP... I submitted case #02524546 to ESRI support. Waiting to hear back.

Yeah, they rely a lot on their customers to work out the kinks. So do a lot of software developers today. I kind of like that aspect. It always seems they are fixing issues that people bring up. I just hate when they seem to have fixed something and another issue arises. I find that the ESRI community is pretty intuitive and good problem solvers. I don't like contacting technical support unless I have exhausted that option.

16 GB of RAM (as I say above minimum specs). As a general rule, I clear my cache often and at the first sign of trouble (didn't mention that, sorry). I started a new project APRX and copied over my table of contents from the old APRX. It seems to be opening quicker and acting better. Not freezing up *knock on wood*.

Thanks, I will try this. So many different caches to clear. Maybe ESRI can develop a nice all-in-one cache/history clearing tool?

Thanks, I don't have an AntiVirus. Not sure I should be plastering that all over the web, but I was under the impression that Windows 10 didn't need one.

ArcGIS Pro was running fast before Christmas 2019, but now in the New Year 2020, it's been really slow. I am using version 2.4.3 and it says it's the current one. I am opening up existing map projects which often takes up to 10 minutes to load (when before it was a minute or less). The one APRX in particular has 2 tabs in different projections for a mosaic project (one to georeference and one to create the mosaic). I don't have a ton of SID images loaded in, maybe a dozen at any time. I group them to stay organized. In addition, there are a few shapefiles with an aerial or topo from ESRI in the background. The files are on a network drive but always have been. Panning around and zoom in general is slow AF. Other symptoms... editing a shapefile will freeze and not come back. I have to crash the program with Task Manager. Obviously I lose work. A colleague (in the same building, different network) recently did a fresh install (after Christmas) and is experiencing similar issues. Both of our computers are above minimum specs for ArcGIS. Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I was just reading a few other responses I wrote on this thread last year. I originally installed 10.5.1 on a Dell M6500, my old computer. Since then I was approved to get a new computer and I was participating on another thread to report that 10.5.1 was just as slow on my "brand new dell computer". I was able to get ArcGIS Desktop 10.4.1 from our software manager and it seemed to fix my slowing issues. I honestly don't think there is much of a difference between 10.4.1 to 10.5.x to 10.6.x or whatever they have today. Here's the "what's new" article What's new in ArcMap—ArcGIS Help | ArcGIS Desktop, I don't use any of these features...

It's poor service on ESRI's part to not get involved with this thread that has been going on for over a year. However, I have remained at 10.4.1 and haven't had the problems you are all experiencing. Perhaps it has to do with a computer component we have in common. I was having my problems on a Dell Precision 7720. Here are the specs (can be found in the properties of "This PC" and a graphics card settings icon in the system tray): Processor: Intel(R) Xenon(R) CPU E3-1505M v6 @3.00GHz Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64bit RAM: 16GB Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics P630 Actually, as I was typing my processor specs this blog recognized other blogs that had the same processor specs mentioned in it. It may lead you down a helpful bunny hole. As for me, I am staying at 10.4.1 until they develop ArcGIS Pro to the point where most of the tools work. Right now, the only thing that doesn't work well is mosaics in ArcGIS Pro. Most of the other tools we use function just as well or better than ArcGIS 10.4.1. I heard through the grapevine that the plan to abandon the ArcGIS Desktop line anyway.

I downgraded to 10.4.x and the problem went away. Glad to hear that folks are still having issues in 10.6 (kidding). I am still leery of upgrading. We have new Dell Precision (6000 - 7000 series) laptops it was happening on, so hardware is definitely not the issue. Maybe ESRI can figure it out before I am forced to upgrade?

I mean this should probably be on another thread, but I have ArcGIS Pro 2.1. It works fine for georeferencing and other common tasks, although the catalog has issues and takes some getting used to. The geodatabases and mosaics were built in ArcCatalog 10.4.x or 10.3.x originally. I remember trying to edit them and it wasn't working. Thanks for the heads up about the compatibility issues. That will be a problem for our workflow.

I downgraded to 10.4.x and never updated one from 10.3.x. ArcGIS Pro 2.1 is glitchy too and several tools we use don't work (building mosaics for example). Also found that you have to have access to the main purchasing account to update, this is bull**** but I digress.
