this is really infuriating. I can count on one hand how many times I've tried to implement an ArcGIS feature for the first time only to learn I can't really cause it has bugs.

Cross post from web developers, since this is more server based I think: I have several services with a geodatabase feature class having attachments. These attachments are almost always PDFs. After much experimenting I have noticed that any PDF over 5MB in size will load as gibberish in the browser window. To narrow this down to ArcGIS server, I put the same file out in a directory on the web server and browsed to it and it opened fine in the browser using the Acrobat plugin. Previous web searches had led me to believe there might be a problem with the plugin, but since it displays fine outside of a ArcGIS map service I believe the plugin and the web server (Tomcat) are configured correctly. Is there some minimum size limit or buffer size in the REST configuration I need to enlarge? Because it seems to always be around 5MB I get the impression there is some coded limitation somewhere that needs to be increased.

Thanks for the links. Is it necessary to call the startup method? I'm just using the sample code and wasn't sure if this was necessary. From what I can tell of this new widget you don't have to build a layer list like before (which never seemed to work) but I'm not certain how it builds it. function addLayerList(layers) { // var layerList = buildLayerVisibleList(layers); var menu = new dijit.Menu({ id: 'layerMenu', baseClass: "customMenu"}) var layerList = new esri.dijit.LayerList({ map: webmap }, "menu"); layerList.startup(); var button = new dijit.form.DropDownButton({ label: i18n.tools.layers.label, id: "layerBtn", iconClass: "esriLayerIcon", title: i18n.tools.layers.title, dropDown: menu }); dojo.byId('webmap-toolbar-center').appendChild(button.domNode); }

I'm using a version of the template I can no longer find because we were not interested in the look of the new template.

When I add the map service in ArcGIS.com I can get a list of layers that are able to be turned on and off. When I add the same service to my javascript viewer (template viewer) I only get one layer which is the service name. From what I can tell it looks like I should be getting a list of layers that can be toggled on and off as well: function addLayerList(layers) { var layerList = buildLayerVisibleList(layers); if (layerList.length > 0) { //create a menu of layers layerList.reverse(); var menu = new dijit.Menu({ id: 'layerMenu', baseClass: "customMenu" }); dojo.forEach(layerList, function (layer) { menu.addChild(new dijit.CheckedMenuItem({ label: layer.title, checked: layer.visible, onChange: function () { if (layer.layer.featureCollection) { //turn off all the layers in the feature collection even //though only the main layer is listed in the layer list dojo.forEach(layer.layer.featureCollection.layers, function (layer) { layer.layerObject.setVisibility(!layer.layerObject.visible); }); } else { layer.layer.setVisibility(!layer.layer.visible); } } })); }); var button = new dijit.form.DropDownButton({ label: i18n.tools.layers.label, id: "layerBtn", iconClass: "esriLayerIcon", title: i18n.tools.layers.title, dropDown: menu }); dojo.byId('webmap-toolbar-center').appendChild(button.domNode); } } //build a list of layers for the toggle layer list - this list //is slightly different than the legend because we don't want to list lines,points,areas etc for each //feature collection type. function buildLayerVisibleList(layers) { var layerInfos = []; dojo.forEach(layers, function (mapLayer, index) { if (mapLayer.featureCollection && !mapLayer.layerObject) { if (mapLayer.featureCollection.layers) { //add the first layer in the layer collection... not all - when we turn off the layers we'll //turn them all off if (mapLayer.featureCollection.layers) { layerInfos.push({ "layer": mapLayer, "visible": mapLayer.visibility, "title": mapLayer.title }); } } } else if (mapLayer.layerObject) { layerInfos.push({ layer: mapLayer.layerObject, visible: mapLayer.layerObject.visible, title: mapLayer.title }); } }); return layerInfos; }

do you find that they all do not open, or only some over a certain size? I recently discovered that good PDFs in my geodatabase attachments will not open in a web browser from the rest end point if they are over a certain size (somewhere around 5Mb). I'm not certain if this is something I need to adjust on my web server or within the rest endpoint configuration.

I have a dataset with a lot of missing attribution. As opposed to presenting the user with a popup that shows a bunch of empty values I'd like to toggle the visibility based on whether the particular field has a value. so for instance for a given fieldname definition: {fieldname: "DPTH_M", label: "Depth (meters): ", visible: true }, if DPTH_M was empty I would not want to display this in the popup. Can visibility be toggled true or false based on this requirement?

I think we may be having the same problem. GO into your logs under the arcgisserver folder. Are you seeing entries that say something about "Unable to connect to the identity store using SSL." I ran post install, does nothing. I restored the arcgisserver folder to a week earlier, nothing.

when I turn off background processing this works (great) but I have identical machines that work just fine in background processing. I don't understand why some would work and others wouldn't. They are all running SP2 for 10.

yeah I tried altering the spatial index levels to no avail. I think I'll try this on R2 with that hotfix though.

so if I am reading right, you essentially had to fool SQL server to use the more efficient index by creating a less efficient one?
