This may be totally anecdotal, but I noticed that the Desktop Indexing Service was often running while my model was running. The Service was set to index the user folders to which I was outputting the data in a subfolder in that directory. So it may have been the case that since I was constantly altering the contents of that directory and the service was set to index very few folders, the indexing service was slowing the model execution and placing some sort of memory limit. At present the model is clipping along at a decent pace and it using well over 256 MB of memory without a noticeable slowing in execution.

Same problem being reported here: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/28156-Geoprocessing-tool-leaking-memory, but in an ArcObjects context, yet iterative looping is involved.

Core i5 @ 2.80 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Feature classes and data tables are specifically not in_memory. I am currently trying to place them in_memory and it doesn't seem to be speeding anything up. Thanks for the feedback though.

15 hours for this last model run. It seems to be getting worse and worse with regard to amount of time it takes to run the model.

Model graphic attached. It took 5 hours for the model run to complete. That's the longest it has ever taken. I should also add that the number of points being buffered are around 25 and the clipping feature is not large at all, so it's not as if the GIS operations being conducted are at all intensive. I'll also add that I am running this from ArcCatalog 10.0 sp5. When the model completes, ArcCatalog appears to be holding onto all that memory it allocated over the model run. I have to force ArcCatalog to quit otherwise it hangs for a while not responding.

I am iterating a model 1000 times to simulate the effect of sample point numbers and spacing on tree canopy cover estimates. The model generates random point locations, buffers those points, and clips the buffered area. Sample points are selected based on the clipped buffer area and a percent canopy cover is calculated based on the sample points and based on the actual area of the clipped buffer relative to the entire area. These values are placed into a personal geodatabase table via make tableview and calculate field. As the model iterates, memory usage increases and increases (now at around 225 Megs after 3 hours) while the model iterates seemingly slower and slower. This particular run is taking more than 3 hours which seems kind of ridiculous considering the simplicity of the operations being performed in each iteration. My assumption is that model data for each iteration is building up over time and thereby slowing things down. There does not appear to be any setting that allows for deleting at each iteration whatever is building up. Any suggestions welcomed to speed up what I am doing. Thank you for your time and attention. I would attach an image of the model, but I am in the midst of a model run now. Will attach later if seeing the model would assist in an assessment of what I may be doing wrong.

At 10.1 you don't need to use ArcPhoto as much of the functionality is available in the Photo Toolset http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//001700000164000000

Pretty sure you don't use script tags in your vbscript (.vbs) file. Remove them and everything should be fine.

Not aware of any Trimble integration in ArcGIS Mobile, so I am not sure what question you are asking. Subtypes in ArcGIS require integer values in the Code field while the Description field for that code value can be any valid string expression. As far as I know, there is no such restriction in data dictionaries in Pathfinder or Terrasync. Code values in data dictionaries can be up to 6 string characters and I assume associated Attributes that are visible to users have to maximum string limit.

Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit are merely iterations on Windows 7 with a new runtime environment, WinRT, for Metro Apps. As for Windows on ARM (WOA), I think very little is known about what this will consist of beyond a very small development community. I doubt ESRI will be supporting ArcGIS Mobile on WOA until actual tablets are available for purchase.

Sorry, but it is absolutely inexcusable that ArcPad 10 cannot operate successfully on Trimble's latest hardware ( http://www.trimble.com/mappingGIS/geoxh6000.aspx?dtID=technical_specs) and this is precisely the same hardware/software combo that ESRI is hawking here ( http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/geocollector/geocollector-for-arcpad.html ) for nearly $9000. The user seems to be running a completely trivial application under ArcPad 10 and is getting a low memory message??!! Unacceptable. This is why our organization will not update to ArcPad 10 on mobile devices any time in the foreseeable future.

Works very well in my experience. Our organization uses this combination of software every day as our older Trimble GeoXM 2005 series and 2008 series units simply cannot run ArcPad 10 with any degree of reliability or acceptable performance, whereas on the desktop the features of ArcPad 10 are definitely preferred.

Some very expensive solutions being discussed in this thread. We purchased a Pentax WG-1 GPS camera ($250) about 6 months ago and have had good results even under relatively heavy tree canopy. In an urban environment, I would expect performance equal to smartphone GPS chips. The Pentax also makes a primitive KML-based GPS tracklog. The camera itself is pretty terrible under low light conditions. If we had it to do again, I would have recommended that we purchased the Panasonic DMC-TS3A ($240) which has better low light performance. Back at the office, one can use ArcPhoto ( http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=14856 ), a free set of tools that will read the embedded GPS data in the EXIF, to create a geolocated photo layer on-the-fly or create a photo feature class with option to treat the photos as managed or unmanaged rasters. If you are looking for "good enough" and cheap, I'd suggest exploring these options. We have yet to attempt integration with ArcPad.
