(old question, but I just ran into the same thing and found this, so I'm adding what worked for me so google will crawl it!) As far as I could tell, this was basically just a problem the jupyter kernel being unhappy in Pro. Quitting and relaunching Pro cured the issue for me. A little more detail on my situation: I wrote a python script and got it working the way I wanted, then used that as the basis for a Python Toolbox (.pyt). When running the tool created from the script, I was getting the "The 'comm' trait of a Layout instance expected a Comm or None trait" error while creating a WebMap from a web map item already retrieved from the portal. The standalone script continued to work; only the GP tool was failing in this way. Quitting and relaunching Pro cleared it up.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the widthScale attribute doesn't seem to actually change anything. That attribute is available on both calcite-shell-panel and calcite-panel, but adding it to either or both of those elements results in no change of width of the display panel! I'm loading beta 80 of the calcite css and js files from the esri CDN. Any suggestions on making my panel embedded in a shell panel wider?

(I realize this is a somewhat old question, but having just run into the issue today, I wanted to make sure there's a googleable answer for the next time it stymies me!) This is a weird one, and the esri documentation is uncharacteristically unhelpful. Here's what I found that worked... Basically, the function needs to return a string, not an extent object; the output type is being set to enable you to chain items in ModelBuilder but isn't actually relevant to the value you return! What worked for me was to return a string in the format "xmin ymin xmax ymax" and set the output type to Extent. Arcpy/ModelBuilder are smart enough to know from the output type that you should be able to use the output of your function as input to an Extent parameter of another tool, and are also smart enough to handle the coercion from the string formatting of the extent to the expected Extent object.

It seems like this is caused by ArcGIS not working properly with old configuration files after an upgrade via the app store. Try deleting the app from your iOS device, which will delete any old settings files. Reinstall the app from the app store, log back in to your esri global account and see if that helps.
