In Johnson City, TN we celebrated GIS Day 2017 by launching Portal to our workforce. Each year the GIS staff does a survey of City staff to benchmark the influence of the technology and how we can better serve our internal audience. We produced a story map to communicate this year’s announcements. http://arcg.is/2zFV7WA

I answered my own question by having a user open and close an edit session while refreshing the SQL query to view sde_object_locks. Whenever an edit session opened, a new record appeared. Closing the edit session removed the record from the table. By cross referencing the object_id field with the version_id field in the sde_versions table, it's possible to see which version is locking the database. Since each of my users has their own version, I know who to contact to disconnect before running maintenance operations that require disconnection.

I am interested in learning a method to identify open edit sessions for users connected to a SQL/SDE database. Using SQL Management Studio, it is possible to examine the sde_object_locks table. However, I am unsure if this reflects merely a lock from a user with edit privileges who is connected to their version or if it additionally means they are in an active edit session. My interest is in being able to disconnect users to perform db maintenance without risking the possibility of data loss if they are in an active edit session.

I've done all those as well, Joe. A fourth, more common strategy, is to end up working from home at night when there are no users connected. This is, of course, not preferable, but often seems to be unavoidable.

So, to sum up, I can safely disconnect sessions with State locks but not with Version locks, without fear of data loss. Of course, I realize they will have to reconnect to continue working after database connections are re-allowed. I can bear the inevitable griping about that as long as I've not caused any data loss. Thanks for your answer, Asrujit.

I need to disconnect users periodically to conduct geodatabase maintenance and programmatically update feature classes, but do not want to risk losing data when it is being actively edited or when a user may have edits in an open version that has not yet been posted. Esri advises against disconnecting active sessions: Manage geodatabase locks—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop Use caution when disconnecting users. Esri recommends that you avoid disconnecting active sessions, especially if the connected user is in the process of editing. You should only disconnect users to drop locks if a session was left open even when not being used (for example, over the weekend), if a session is orphaned and locking an object, or if a deadlock situation occurs. It's pretty clear that being in an edit session is "in the process of editing". However, what is less clear how this prohibition applies to open versions not in an active edit session but with edits that have not yet posted to their parent version (dbo). If I disconnect a user with their unposted version open and then run maintenance actions like Compress, Analyze Datasets, and Rebuild Index, do I risk losing the data in their version? It's easy to see what users are currently connected to an enterprise geodatabase. The following article details the process of using either ArcCatalog or ArcPy to list users. Manage connections in SQL Server—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop How to identify the nature of the connection? It's all in the lock type. The following article details the three types of locks: schema, state, and version. Geodatabase locks—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop The above article states that version locks indicate an active edit session. State locks are when a version is simply open. Clearly, disconnecting a session with a version lock risks data loss. However, is the same true for State locks?

With the release of 10.4 this past week, I noticed that this tool was one that was updated, according to this. I can't find any Esri source (the tool documentation has not been updated) that details the changes and whether or not they did anything besides adding options for the Feature_Format parameter. I don't have a 10.4 installation to look into this myself. Can anyone who does confirm whether the problem of a different spatial reference for .dwg output still exists? Thanks.

Just noticed that the unzipping added an additional eLocate folder in the path: \client\stemapp\widgets\eLocate\eLocate The top level eLocate folder also included a file: "Older enhancements or changes.txt". I have eliminated the extra folder in the path and restarted WAB. All is well. Many thanks.

Robert, This app is just what I'm looking for. I'm a recent convert to WAB from Flex (having used many of your custom flex apps) but am having trouble deploying your custom WAB app. I downloaded, unzipped, and put it in my /clients/stemapp/widgets folder but when I edit a new application, it's not showing up to pick from as an option to deploy. I'm using WAB Developer Edition 1.3. Any help is appreciated.

Question: What tool or set of tools in modelbuilder can be used to edit values in the field of an Esri table using the in_memory workspace? My basic task is to pass two user supplied parameters (Lat and Long as doubles) to the XY EVENT LAYER tool, which requires a table as input. I don't want to write out a table to disk for every time this process runs so I am hoping to use the in_memory workspace option for the CREATE TABLE tool. I have tried using CALCULATE FIELD, referencing the relevant field from the in_memory table to pass the user supplied values (doubles). The tool runs fine but no output is written to the fields of the in_memory table, therefore nothing passes down the line to the XY EVENT LAYER tool and I get no geometry for output. Is it possible to write to an in_memory table in this way? Any suggestions on a simpler way to work this problem? Thanks.

I have a gp "clip and ship" service based on the model in Arctoolbox/Server Tools/Data Extraction/Extract Data Task. My ArcGISServer is at version 10.3. The REST service is called from the Data Extract widget within our Flex viewer application (v. 3.7). A user recently noticed that extracting data to the AutoCAD .dwg format produces a file with a projection in Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (EPSG: 3857) while the same AOI and data layers extracted as Esri geodatabase or shapefile is extracted as State Plane Virginia South (EPSG: 2284). This viewer and tool have been running without incident and frequently used for over two years and nobody has noticed this before. We recently upgraded our ArcServer instance from 10.2 to 10.3. Is anyone aware of a change to the Data Extract Task (model) or the script tool upon which it is based (Extract Data, in the same toolbox) that might explain this new behavior? I suppose it is possible that this was never noticed but that seems unlikely. Is it possible to somehow reference a .prj or .dwg "seed" file within this model? I already had it configured to use the Spatial Reference string variable set to Same as Input so I'm unclear as to why this is not respected when outputting to .dwg but is for .shp and .gdb. We have a large user base who prefer CAD as their spatial application so fixing the .dwg output to match our native data projection is a priority.

I renamed the two _tsf files in the C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet directory (must turn on hidden folders to see) to _old_tsf, which did the trick. I was able to hit the new license server and check out a license, which created the new _tsf.data and _tsf.data_backup files in that same directory. Thanks for that suggestion, Dan.

I have a situation where I need to delete a license that has been checked out from a license server, without access to that server. Our organization made a change in license server and ArcMap version. Some users had a license checked out from the old server, now unavailable. They are now pointing to the new license server and unable to get a new license checked out because of the existing license on their machine from the old server. Normally, I would just check it back in to the old one, then point to the new server and get a new license. But the old server is no longer accessible. A successful strategy has been to simply let the old license expire and then check out from the new server. However, I need to be able to force this process early for some users who will be in the field and without access to the new server when their license expires. Can I delete the checked out version of their license on their local machine? Windows 7 ArcMap 10.3 FlexNet license server C:\ProgramData\FLEXnet contains a ARCGIS_0038ce00_tsf.data file that I suspect, but have been unable to confirm, might be the correct file to delete. Has anyone experienced this or a similar situation?

Is it possible to change ownership, either in SQL Management Studio or ArcCatalog, of a feature class created by a non-sysadmin user, to the default (dbo) schema? I am using SDE 10.3 and SQL 2008 R2. Users authenticate via Operating System Auth (Windows Active Directory). I have a number of users who need to be able to create new feature classes but our security policy permits only server admins to have sysadm rights on SQL, therefore any feature classes created by non-sysadmin are named and owned by that user, even if they are given dbo as their default schema in SQL. The resulting feature class name is "[database].[domain].[user].[featureclass]" rather than the desired [database].DBO.[featureclass]. I would like to allow my users to create the feature class under their account and then use my sysadmin account to change ownership to DBO so as to be available to all enterprise users under the default schema. I have tried simply editing the dbo.SDE_table_registry table in SQL to change the owner to DBO, but when I do, ArcCatalog no longer displays the feature class (under either name). Clearly, this is not the only place where the owner is being stored in the SDE tables. Does anybody know of a way to effect this ownership change, or a different workflow that would allow non-sysadmin role users to create new features as DBO?

Lee, try going to the REST endpoint for your service and drilling all the way down to the task URL to put in the GP widget XML, rather than just the GP service that contains that task.
