Can anyone tell me when to check/uncheck Trim Polygon option in Service Area Layer Properties dialog box while doing Network Analyst problems? By default Trim Polygon values comes as 100 m. Shall we need to change it according to our problem? koushik_p

Before hitting the Solve button, go to Network Analyst window. Click the Route Properties button next to the Route layer in the Network Analyst window. This will bring up Layer Properties dialog box. Click Analysis Settings tab. Select impedance as Minutes. Are you using Turn Feature Class in Network Dataset and does that Turn Feature class has unrestricted Reverse turns? Just go to Network Dataset Properties dialog box, click turn tab and check whether a Turn Feature Class is present along with <Global Turns>. Uncheck the turn feature class. Koushik Paul

Well, as far as I am concerned, I give negative impedance (like -1 seconds) against Reverse turn, if I do not want Reverse turns. That restricts Reverse turn. In Network Dataset, under Attribute tab, when you add an attribute, there is an option to make an attribute "Use by default". You have to check the check box located at the Add Attribute dialog box, so that the attribute acts by default. Generally, the time-related cost attribute like Minutes, (also Oneway, Hierarchy) are made to be used by default; while length related cost-attribute like Meters, Length, Miles, etc are not made to be used by default. Whether an attribute is being used by default or not, you will be able to know by seeing a small blue-coloured D mark against that attribute. Under such circumstances, the shortest route will be calculated based on time-related cost attribute. Koushik Paul India

Thanks Mr. Karthikeyan. I think I have got the answer. I was selecting all the lines/edges (that met at an intersection) at a time. It was giving the error message. Now, I started selecting lines in pairs (which is quite reasonable, because, a vehicle, moving along a line, may move right or left or straight or reverse). Now the turn feature attribute table is getting populated. Koushik Paul

I did a similar project with FT_Minutes and TF_Minutes, but the values didn't change automatically- everytime I had to use the formula in Field Calculator. Shape_Length field, however, changes automatically. Koushik Paul

I have a street network (named Streets_Corr). I work in ArcGIS Desktop 9.3. I want to give turn penalties at all intersections. At majority of the intersections, I have given Global Turn Delay; while at some, where there are traffic signals, I propose to make a Turn Feature class and give penalties as per actual traffic signal cycle. In Streets_Corr, I have used Planarize tool so as to break the lines at all vertices. I also have used ArcHydro 9 to get From_nodes and To-nodes. I have then built the Network Dataset in ArcCatalogue (Connectivity: Any Vertex). Next, I have used Create Turn Feature Class in ArcToolbox. A blank table called select_turns was created. Then, I started ArcMap and added the Network Dataset and select_turns in Table Of Contents. Started Editor. In Editor Toolbar, target layer - select_turns. Edge Snapping was selected for the street network layer Streets_Corr. Then I started using Sketch tool to select the edges/lines at an intersection. However, everytime I get a message- "The Create Feature Task could not be completed. The edges are not adjacent in the Network Dataset in this sequence". Can anyone tell me where am I getting wrong? My Network Dataset, Streets_corr, select_turns are in a feature dataset in a .gdb file. I do not have a Turn Table. Should I make a TurnTable first and then convert it to a turn feature class? How to create a Turn Table in ArcGIS 9.3 in that case? Koushik Paul

Thank you so much, mkennedy. I have now just one unresolved question. Can you just tell me how to make the text file with lat/long coordinates (as you have advised)?

' Thanks 'flederfauz' for your reply. But my question was different. You have given me how to do georeferencing. That I know ( since I have gone through 'Introduction to GIS' by Kang-tsung Chang). My question was I have some paper toposheets where the latitudes/longitudes are given and at the bottom the scale is given as 1:50000. I am based in India. Before actual georeferencing, I know I have to choose a Datum and Coordinate system. I have selected Predefined > Geographic Coordinate System> GCS Everest 1830. Do I need to choose Lambert's conformal conic (for example, Projected Coordinate System>National Grids>Indian Subcontinent) also? Because I know that for our Survey of India maps we need to use Everest and Lambert's conformal conic projection. What is the correct method?

Dear Sir/Madam, I have some paper maps in latitude, longitude and distances in metres. I have already scanned them to my laptop in tiff format. Now i want to georeference them. I am based in India. I have right-clicked on to Layers> Properties. Then in the Data Frame properties, selected Predefined > Geographic Coordinate System> GCS Everest 1830. While georeferencing, I want to enter lat/long values given in the toposheet and have metric units. I have heard that for India, Everest and lambert's conformal conic are used. After I have selected Everest 1830 do I need to again select for Lambert's conformal conic (for example, Projected Coordinate System>National Grids>Indian Subcontinent) ? How to bring metric units?
