Thank you so much for posting this idea!! Would love to see an easier, more user friendly method implemented.

Update for anyone who comes to this page wondering the same thing: I think I finally found the answer here: it's in the Data tab. A LOT more clicking than the pop up editor but I'm glad there's still a way. https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-online-questions/making-fields-in-view-layer-visible-but-non/m-p/1170591#M45880

Now that the visualization page for hosted feature layers is modeled after the newer map viewer, it follows that the ability to configure whether certain attributes in the popup are editable or not is not available via the popup settings any more, because it's part of the configure form environment in the new map viewer. However, without the configure form button on the visualization tab for a layer, how are we supposed to specify attribute editability in the layer settings now? It seems like there should be a way for us to do this for the layer as a whole if we want, rather than going into each webmap to configure whether a field is editable. Is the form planned for visualization? I get that form functionalities may not be compatible with certain apps, so in the absence of the form button can you provide some other way for us to turn editing on and off for a field at the layer level? Maybe in the 'fields' settings? If this would be better in ideas I can make a post there, I was just hoping that I was missing something and someone can enlighten me on a best practice for this after the June 2022 update. Thx

I'm having the same issues described in this thread and have really been banging my head over what the issue could be... Everything was working fine then all of a sudden, our field staff are getting these download failures which I'm able to replicate. Map areas of a smaller size work fine but larger areas fail to download in Field Maps (both within the app and in the online map area creation). I currently have a support ticket open with ESRI about this and she casually mentioned that attachments have been an issue for folks lately, but it does not appear to be a main focus of our troubleshooting so far (I do have layers with attachments). I am currently tasked with republishing all of the map layers and recreating the maps- glad (?) to know others are having this issue too and it's not just me!

Agree with the comments on this thread - also, I don't understand what's up with the measure tool in Field Maps generally. When I first picked up the app and started demo'ing it for folks last month, you could change units in the measure tool, screenshot is from March 17: And this morning, 4/7/22, after updating to the latest app version:, I see no way to change units like before (other than to go to your profile settings, which is annoying): Am I missing something?

Thanks for this explanation, this exact thing just happened to me (duplicate layers and something happened with the filtering to result in that error!) I was able to get rid of the 'Invalid value for property 'excludedLabelsVisible' which should always be 'true' error by adding the copies via URL, however the map would not download in Field Maps so I ended up removing the duplicates. I know that copies of layers was problematic in Collector and the workaround is to create views, I was just hoping that filtered copies of layers would be supported in Field Maps.

I'm currently trying the same and similarly cannot get this to work in the new map viewer. Hoping for some updates soon!

I also have this question- our team of field biologists need to be able to see their survey routes throughout the whole year, thus I am currently looking at methods for archiving the location tracking data in a separate layer since there is still a 30 day limit. Have any best practices been implemented for storing archive location tracking data? Surely we aren't the only folks interested in such a thing. Thanks for any intel!

Our field staff would like to see a capability in field maps to create a point using a set of known, existing coordinates, in addition to the current methods for point creation within the app. I provided a workaround of using Pro to edit the feature service and create the point with coordinates that way, but they really need a way to do this offline and in the field. Thanks!

Hi there, Thanks for this clarification, it's super helpful. I've been creating and assigning custom roles as the solution suggests, but am having issues when making a 'Facilitator + View Tracks' role. I based the custom role off of the Facilitator role, added the ability to view tracks, and when I assigned the person the role (I had to remove them as a collaborator first to do that) I no longer had the option to add them back to the org as a collaborator. This makes sense on its face since only a Facilitator and Admin can be a collaborator but I was hoping it would recognize the custom role as having all the capabilities of the Facilitator. The only workaround I can think of is to make them an Admin but I'd rather not do that as they don't need full Admin powers. Do you have any suggestions or workarounds for this scenario? Thanks!

Also coming here to see if there was ever a solution? I heard in a webinar that you could create views for sharing/offline use, and then update the root layer that the view(s) stem from, but I've been trying that today and I can't overwrite the layer if there are maps downloaded in Field Maps. Frustrating, I would love to be able to keep our reference data more up to date without having to disrupt folks' field workflows. Is there an easier way? I've tried editing the layers directly but there are too many features for me to do this efficiently.

It would be great if when adding an ArcGIS Online feature service to the Pro project via 'add data from path,' and pasting the URL, the added layer respects the online layer's visualization settings in the same way that adding the same layer from Portal/Catalog does. I have a service that multiple users are editing, and I have it set up so that only a few attribute fields are editable, and several other fields are hidden for the purposes of this project. When I add the layer to Pro via Portal, only the desired fields are visible and editable and everything I specified in the Visualization environment in ArcGIS Online is reflected in the added layer in Pro. When I add the same layer to Pro via URL, none of the settings I configured under the visualization page in ArcGIS Online are respected and I can see, as well as EDIT, field that I don't want to be viewed or edited at the current stage of this project. I've tried this on the root service as well as a view and have produced the same results. It would be really nice if the settings were consistently applied across the different methods for adding data to Pro.

I would like to see Pro respect an online service's settings when adding the service from a path, like it does when you add data to Pro from the catalog. Fields that I have hidden or removed editing in the online service are visible and editable when adding the same layer to Pro via URL. Why is this?
