I have three ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 servers in a arcgis site. On one of the three servers, I am constantly receiving the following error message in the arcgis server log: "The Web Server was found to be stopped when it should have been started. Restarting it." That message is recorded once per minute, 24x7. A little background: All servers are Server 2008 (not R2), 64bit enterprise, 8GB ram, real servers (not virtual) Using web adaptor on IIS 7 on a fourth server 2008 server single arcgis site, two clusters: default and imageserver. Two of the servers are in the default cluster, single server in imageserver cluster (has imageserver extension on it) Using SSL with signed certs A week ago on a Monday morning, I get to work and the web adaptor does not respond, can not login to arcgis server manager or the rest admin on any of the server. so I restart the arcgisserver service on all of the arcgis servers. could now login to rest admin on each server, web adaptor still does not respond. Restarted IIS and finally can login to the arcgis server manager. Server manager shows one server started, the other two are down (one from the default cluster, one from imageserver cluster). I double-check in services.msc, arcgisserver service is started. I look in rest admin, the two servers that show as down in server manager show as stopped/started in rest admin. I try to start the servers in server manager and it gives me an error. So I try it in rest admin and it works. I refresh server manager and it again shows those two as stopped. I give up and reboot all four servers. I wait 30 minutes or so and then check, same result, one server is started, other two are stopped. I try to start them in rest admin again, it reports them both as started/started, I check in server manger, and after about one minute, those two servers show stopped again. At this point I open a incident with ESRI. The tech wants me to do a repair install of arcgis server on those two servers. I do it on one and reboot that server, same result. I send him some of the logs and screen shots and he will get back to me. I remove the two faulty servers from the site and add them back. I get several errors from server manager while it tries to add them back (I did not record those errors, wish I had), but, after a refresh (f5), server manager shows both of those servers added back, but still stopped. I try to start them in rest admin and it shows them started/started. I check in server manager, and they are both started. I wait 5 minutes, still started. I check the arcgis server logs at this point, and the two faulty servers are now showing the following error every minute: "The Web Server was found to be stopped when it should have been started. Restarting it." I reboot those two servers again, still showing that error in the log EVERY MINUTE. I send the logs and screen shots to ESRI again, and ask for the ticket to escalated. They escalate it, and I have to go over everything again with the new person. We have looked at a few things and sending e-mails and logs back and forth, but no resolution to date. All published services seem fine, but we do have to reboot the servers every other night because arcgis server gets unstable after a while and services will stop working and generate various errors in the log, a reboot clears it up. I miss arcgis server 10. Two days ago, one of the two servers STOPPED generating the web server error message, with nothing changed by me. Still nothing from ESRI. The server that is still recording the error is the one in the imageserver cluster. I moved it to the default cluster temporarily to see if that would affect it, it still logs the error every minute. -------------- Does the apache web server used by arcgis server 10.1 create logs somewhere? I'm not familiar with apache, can we "control" it somehow, any command line interface to it? Any one have any ideas about the error that posts every minute?

You are right, it only fixes the issue if you are running a site with one machine. Otherwise we need to wait until 10.2 for the fix. This is terrible. If ESRI has a fix for this problem, they need to release it as a hotfix right now. I've seen other posts in the forum about this very problem. However, when you call tech support, it's like they've never heard of it (I've sent links to this thread and others to two different techs). ESRI - this is supposed to be an enterprise level solution, fix this problem. We should not have to wait for your show next month for the fix. This needs to be addressed in a hotfix (along with the special characters in passwords issue and UNC path registration issues). These are serious issues that make it almost impossible to deploy a redundant enterprise system.

How does moving the config store back to the c drive fix the issue? If you have more than one server, you still have to share the folder and access it using the unc path. What am I missing?

You could try \\IP address\share\folder. Anything in the NT event log on the server hosting the share? I cannot access it via the IP, just tried. This is a MS Windows cluster on Server 2008. Perhaps this is part of the issue. I'll try to determine why it doesn't work with the IP. Anyone have any pointers?

Does the ArcGIS Server account have the rights needed to log on the machine which is hosting the UNC share? I agree that this should not be needed but perhaps you could add it to see if that is the problem. If you don't control that server then can you do all of this on a test server which you can control? See if there are any NT event log entries on the machine hosting the UNC share. Yes, the ArcGIS server service account has rights to logon to the server hosting the UNC share. I've logged in as that account to make sure it has rights to do do it and access the share from both the hosting server and the ArcGIS server. I've deleted and recreated the share. You mentioned special characters earlier. My servers do have a hyphen (dash) in the server names due to naming conventions. I can't change that. It hasn't been an issue before. I've also registered a different folder on this this same ArcGIS server that is hosted on a different server (with a dash in the name). It took about 100 tries before it took, and then it worked out of the blue for no reason. Very strange. At this point, the only thing I haven't tried is to login to the arcgis server with the service account and map the UNC share as a drive letter, then see if it will register as a drive letter. I shouldn't have to do that, and I will have to do it for all servers in the site. I definitely think something is wrong with ArcGIS server 10.1 sp1 and wish ESRI would chime in. I do have a ticket open for this with ESRI (waiting on a phone call now). If anyone else is having this problem, can you let me know if you resolved it and what you did, or what you have done to troubleshoot if you haven't resolved it yet?

I think that if you search the forums that you will find other users who have (and are) struggling with similar issues. Just brainstorming: Perhaps it is related to inability of ArcGIS Server to find your server. There have been many posts about server having issues with machine names which contain certain characters. Suggest that you use very simple names. Also, you might try using a fully qualified domain name. There have been various issues related to the resolution of machine names. You might try running the SysInternals Process Monitor utility in order to ascertain what the underlying failure is, i.e. what is ArcGIS Server trying to do that is failing. That might give you the insight that you need to be able to understand the problem. When I have problems like this what I try to do is to simplify as much as possible. I might start with a non-domain account and see if that works. Another thing to try is to just use local storage, i.e. not UNC. I understand that these configurations are not what you want to deploy but the goal here is to figure out why it is failing. If you resolve this then please post the resolution. I am hoping that 10.2 has better error messages in these situations. Thank you for the ideas. I'm trying to troubleshoot it with ProcMon right now. The error generated is: LOGON FAILURE Operation: CreateFile Class: File System From the ArcGIS server, I can login as the arcgis service account (a domain account) and access the unc path, using either the servername, the fqdn, or the ip, and create files. So, the error that is generated from ProcMon, could that mean that the ArcSOC service is trying to actually login to the server specified in the UNC path? If so, perhaps the service account needs special rights ("access this computer from the network", "logon as a service", etc.) to the file server in the UNC path? This shouldn't be, but all I can think of right now.

I have ArcGIS Server 10.1 SP1 running on Windows Server 2008. I am trying to register a shared folder using the UNC path as a data store. I've tried this in ArcCatalog 10.1 sp1 and through the web manager interface, and it fails with: Invalid folder location. Unable to access this location. The ArcGIS Server service account is a domain account with full permissions to the share and full NTFS permissions. I've verified this by logging into the ArcGIS server as the service account, opening the UNC path in question, and reading/writing files. The path I'm trying to register is of the form \\server\share\folder. I've also tried just \\server\share, makes no difference. I have an open ticket with ESRI on this, but the tech I'm working with seems to think I haven't applied permissions or I'm mistyping the path. As I stated earlier, I've verified I have the permissions correct and I'm using the correct path. It opens with no problem and that service account has full permissions. I think this may be an issue with ArcGIS Server. Any assistance is appreciated.

I have two 10.1 SP1 ArcGIS servers in the same site and in the same cluster. I have one license for the image server extension. Is the only way to use the IS extension to put each server in its own cluster and then set any imagery service (mosaic) to would require the IS extension to only be served using the cluster that has the server with IS extension license? I hope I worded that clearly enough :^) Thanks

Has this problem (with UNC paths for config-store, etc., causing slow downs in server performance) been resolved? If you're going to have multiple servers in a site, is there a way around having the config-store on a unc path? We're at 10.1 SP1 and this issue still seems to be present. I was surprised at how poorly it performs on some rather robust hardware (and just 10-15 published services).

Thanks to all for your pointers and links. I've read through them, and this is what I have right now. At this point, I can't get anything to display in the edit widget, and I'm assuming I should see the template I setup in arcmap. Yes, that is possible with the Edit widget. Your data needs to be coming from an ArcGIS Server Feature Service (and be editable). See http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/flex-viewer/concepts/index.html#/Edit_widget/01m30000003v000000/ Live sample: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/flex-viewer/live/index.html?config=apps/config-edit.xml Is there a walk-through example of creating template? I only have one attribute I want to be updatable (click on the existing feature and have a drop down selection of 1,2,3 or 4), no drawing/adding features. Also, I read in another post that the feature layer should be a mxd, not a msd. Is this correct? Thanks, Wayne

Is this possible with the editwidget or some other widget: Allow users via the webviewer to click on a feature in a featurelayer and have a popup show the value for a particular field for that featuer and allow the user to edit that value (from a dropdown of selections)? I don't see how to do this. Any help is appreciated.

I need to make some changes to the popups in flex viewer 3, but not sure how to. I don't see where in the flex viewer source where the popups are created. I found popuprendererskin.mxl in the API, but not sure what to do with it. I tried adding it to the skins folder in the flex project source for the viewer, but that had not affect on the build of the project and changes I make aren't reflected. Thanks for any help you can provide me.
