Hi Caitlyn. We have a similar workflow requirement in our line of work (splitting forestry harvest areas when only partially complete). We jacked it by having fueled staff use Collector to capture what we call a "Split line" and then the GIS team use that line to split the underlying polygons and update the attributes to suit. Something similar may work for your needs. Capture points or a line in the field with basic attributes (i.e. Left = corn right = sorghum) and there lines are symbolised with arrow heads to show the direction of capture.

It's good to see this feature has been added to ArcOnline (Calculate geometry in AGOL to find the area or length of a polygon or line).....BUT..... it is only good if it gives lengths and areas of meaning. How can I make my features calculate the Actual length and area? Below is my test data created using Australia's GDA1994 MGA Zone 50 (1 Ha square with 100 metre sides and a 2nd rough square to closely match). The same 2 shapes published online with the Shape_Area and Shape_Length fields giving results that are clearly wrong. Instead of an Area of 10,000 m2 and Length of 400 m, I'm getting 14365.30 m2 and 479.42 m.

Hi Xander. I think I am going to go down the path similar to what you have described with multiple records at the same location. One record will appear (start) and will disappear (finish) when the value is changed and is replaced by a new record with the updated status. Might be the easiest way for me to do what I am envisioning with my limited knowledge and time. Thanks for the help and the idea.

Hi Kelly. Thanks for your reply but it's not the symbology. That works okay. if the value changes the symbol changes. I was more trying to figure out how to make it change based on changes to the values over time. However, I don't think what I am trying to do can be done, at least not with the knowledge I have from being self taught. I can get it appear and disappear based on a start and end date but not to change multiple times over time as it gets updated. I was hoping that versioning might make this possible but apparently not. I have come up with an alternative arrangement though using the start-visible/end-not visible setup instead.

Gave it a whirl and came up a treat. Thank you. Still getting my head around how the scripting works. Only problem with being self taught!

Can someone please help me out with what way I should be setting up a point layer so that it performs the following task? The points are created once at the start and is time enabled so that over time as a feature changes status from Occupied to Vacant to Occupied, the symbology changes to reflect this. I am new to this and have tried using the Edit Date as the trigger to change colour but instead the point just doesn't show up until the slider reaches the latest edit and hides all previous views. I'm attempting to show the occupancy status of buildings in a CBD and how it changes over time. Thanks!

I have a series of questions asking if a place is open on set days where the answers are either "Closed", "All-day" or "Set Times". If "Set Times" is selected then Open and Closing time fields appear for manual input. I would like to then concatenate all these answers into a single field for use later. This would result with multiple combinations in that field as shown below; i) "Closed" ii) "All_day" iii) "08:00 am - 05:00 pm" or something to this effect if I could get it to work I've tried numerous combinations of formulas based on the "IF" scenario in the calculate and default fields with the type as hidden and calculate. I manage to get the "Closed" and "All_day" answers to work but not the concatenate part if "Set Times" is selected. I don't know if this is possible so hopefully someone can set me on the right path (if it exists!). I've uploaded some sample data. Thanks!

Being able to select a feature and select a "split/cut by trail" option where you can then stream your way along or tap a line onto the screen would make life sooooooooo much better.

So simply put, I'm trying to use the Feature Class to Feature Class tool and as a part of the output feature class (going into a GDB), I want to include the current date. I've tried using the following text in the Output Feature Class field but alas the tool crashes; Output_%Date% Any suggestions on where I'm going wrong? The aim is to build up a list of feature classes that can be compared using a different model later on to track changes between versions. UPDATE: OK, So I figured out that I needed to create the Date Variable to start with which I have done. My next issue is that it won't work because the date contains 2 slashes ( 18/07/2016 ). What would be the best way of getting this converted to a text element that can replace the / with an _ and maybe even reorder the numbers in reverse (e.g. Output_2016_07_18).

I found that page during my googles. What do you mean by run it separately or as a tool? Is there another way of displaying information (text, lists, etc) in Layout View besides as a Live Legend, Image or Text Element?

This isn't quite what I'm looking for. The username doesn't come in formatted correctly (for instance a user name is "johnd" but I want to display "John Doe") Can this be done using either the python dictionary sort of setup or by reading the dynamic text field? Also, when I tried your python script, it just returned the script as text.

I've googled and experimented and continue to fail. All I'm trying to do is display our Full Name in the Map Layout (a text box) but Arcs dynamic text only returns username (ie "usern" instead of "User Name"). Is there any way of writing a lookup list or If/Else logic script for or python code that will allow me to have a Text box display a users full name? I'm happy if I need to write a list of users for it to return and will be even happier if it can be done to return someones full name based on windows login or something.

Either way. Just trying to figure out a better way to do it than waiting and seeing if it succeeds which is what happens currently when someone interrupts from elsewhere in the network. It would be good to have it built in as as part of the model so that it's all wrapped up in a simple operation though.

Is there a way in model builder to set the model to look for lock files on all data used in the process before commencing? Alternatively, is there a way to get the model to wait for a lock file to clear before continuing instead of just stopping and leaving everything half done? Whilst these are the preferable methods, if they can't be achieved, can it be set up to skip steps and go down an alternative path which I could write to restore the original data (my model makes copies of the old data before commencing, which get deleted at the end if it completes all processes successfully in case another user access the data and interrupts the processes).
