Peter, thanks for the very interesting and informative post! I use the same technique for incorporating 360-degree images into a story map, namely hosting them on my own website and then doing an embed. While I find the technique works perfectly with “classic” story maps (for example, A Look Around Redlands and A Look Around Redlands Revisited), I have been unable to get it to work reliably using a new-style story map. I can create the embeds and they appear to work fine for a while but then, one-by-one and seemingly randomly, the embeds fail with a message that the external content isn’t supported. As a result, I have had to replace all the 360-degree embeds in a new story map I’m working on (A Look Around the San Gorgonio Wilderness) with simple links that open the 360-images in a new browser tab. I wonder if you or any other readers of this post have encountered a similar problem with embeds working for a while and then failing? I use a commercial package called Pano2VR for hosting the panoramas rather than three.js directly, and the issue may be due to some idiosyncrasy that’s unique to that package.

I have found a way to reproduce the scenario of a new link breaking an old one: Using the earlier steps 1-10, create a new story map with a floating panel sidecar that has the subheading “section 1”. Publish it and get the ‘section 1” URL into the copy buffer. Click on the “+” sign above the sidecar and select “text” Type in “link 1” and press the Enter key Highlight “link 1” and mark it as a bulleted list Position the cursor at the end of the “link 1” text and press Enter to create a second bulleted entry Type “link 2” into the second entry Apply the “section 1” URL to “link 1” Publish the story map Click on “link 1”; based on my tests, it will be a broken link Go back into edit mode and reapply the URL to “link 1”; publish and this time the link should work Go back into edit mode and apply the “section 1” URL to “link 2”; publish again; based on my tests, link 2 will work but link 1 will be broken again. Going back to edit mode and fixing the broken link then repeatedly causes the working link to break Consistent with the original issue report above, reapplying the URL to both the broken link and the working link results in both finally working. I know bulleted lists weren't mentioned thus far but maybe a similar mechanism is at work.

Just to be clear, the Enter key seems to be needed when entering the text that will be associated with the link. As you indicated, the URL won't be applied unless Enter is pressed when entering it.

I’m encountering the same problem with old links breaking when new links are added. In trying to come up with a simple case that reproduces the problem, I have found a very odd issue with the way a link is created. If I type in the text for a link without following that text with the Enter key, and then establish the link, the link comes up broken and goes to “aboutblank#blocked” as mentioned above. If I type in the text for the link and follow it with the Enter key, then the link works properly. As I said, very odd. Here are the steps to reproduce this problem: Create a new story map Type in a title Click on the “+” to the left of “Tell your story” and create a sidecar Click on “done” to select “floating panel” as the default Click on the “+” to the left of “Continue your story…” and select “text” Type “section 1” Highlight the text and mark it as a subheading Publish the story map Copy the section link for “section 1” by hovering over the text and then clicking on the link icon that appears to the left Click on the “More actions” option at the top of the story map (“…”) and select “Edit story” Click on the “+” sign above the sidecar and select “text” Type in “section 1 link” but do not press the Enter key Highlight “section 1 link” and click on the link icon; paste in the link for section 1 that is in the copy buffer Publish the story map Click on “section 1 link” These steps consistently produce a broken link in the tests I have run. I’m not sure yet if this is directly related to the issue in this case. I’m going to run some more tests. If needed, I could probably produce a video of the above sequence.

That was it. I removed all trailing spaces from the TAB_NAME entries in the CSV file and the duplicate tab is gone now. So with version 1.4.9 dynamic updates to the feature service are now properly reflected in the story map shortlist. Thanks for all the help in getting this working! You can consider this case closed now.

As a side note, I tried sorting my updated CSV file by TAB_NAME but I still end up with two "ALL" tabs.

I just noticed that I'm seeing what looks like new behavior this morning (or somehow missed this before). The story map is now showing the new locations, but it's putting them on a duplicate tab. There are two "ALL" tabs showing now, one with the original four locations and one with the five new locations. Note, although I added six new locations, only five of those were targeted at the "ALL" tab. Actually, I think that when I ran my earlier tests I didn't have any tabs defined. Maybe the presence of the TAB_NAME field is somehow tied to the update process? Any ideas on how I can avoid duplicate tabs after an update? Thanks!

Sure. These should be the links to everything: CSV: http://lookabout.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=6119d955e27b4bc1a0394f98e28384a0 Feature Service: http://lookabout.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=88bae943edcb430bb24fa9f152aa24fd Web map: http://arcg.is/2jIaSoa http://lookabout.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=e9dd73e61aec4722835e135633348f1b Story map: http://lookabout.net/test_agol_csv_fs_shortlist/ The original CSV used to create the feature service defined four locations. After creating the story map I used the "overwrite" option on the feature service to add six more locations. All show up on the web map but the story map only sees the original four. Thanks!

I'm afraid that still didn't work for me. I obtained the version 1.4.9 files from GitHub, updated "index.html" with my web map id, and posted the files to my web server. When I run the shortlist story map from my web server, though, I still only see the original set of locations. As before, both the feature service and the web map show the new features but the shortlist does not. However, I switched to another approach and had better luck. I posted my CSV file (lat/long based) to my web server and used it to define the point layer in a new AGOL web map. I switched my shortlist "index.html" to use that new web map and now changes to the CSV file are dynamically reflected in both the web map and the shortlist story map each time they start up. While this approach meets my needs it's a bit more awkward due to the need to add lat/long to my CSV entries. If you have other suggestions regarding the feature service approach I'd be interested. Thanks!

That probably explains the problem. I am using the version hosted on AGOL. I'll try switching to the downloadable version. Many thanks!

I'd like to be have my shortlist story map update dynamically when I add new points to the underlying feature service but I can't seem to get that to work. The web map shows the new points but the shortlist only shows the original ones. Here are the steps I followed: 1. Created a CSV file defining my original set of locations for the story map. 2. Uploaded my CSV file to AGOL and used it to create a feature service. 3. Created a web map and used the feature service to create a layer. 4. Created a Shortlist story map from the web map. 5. Story map looks fine and all points present. 6. Updated my local copy of the CSV file to add some new locations. 7. User the "Overwrite" option on the feature service to upload the new CSV, 8. The feature service shows the new points. 9. The web map shows the new points. 10. The shortlist story map doesn't show the new points. Not sure if it's a factor but my AGOL account is through the ArcGIS Home Use program. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
