Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue and if there is something I can do to resolve it. In the past I have used the slick ESRI base maps for many maps without an issue - good, relatively speedy performance when using them in ArcGIS desktop. Recently they have gotten so slow as to be completely unusable to me. I have tried using them in different networks (home, work, university) and all have the same performance issues for me. When I add the baselayer (even the simple grey basemap) my cursor just spins until i decide to end the Arcmap process via Task Manager. Interestingly, when using AGOL only, I can create a webmap with any of the basemaps and the performance is super speedy. Thoughts? Thanks much in advance! Best, Matt

Hi Mike - Thanks for your response. We are dealing with a feature service (points). This is only happening for one user, and he has tried two different machines as well. It's just puzzling... Thanks again for any thoughts Matt

Hi All - I'm working with a few people compiling point data in AGOL and it's been going really well for the most part. That said, recently we discovered that several of the points that were added along with the associated attributes, lost those attributes, although the point itself remained. Workflow: 1 - add point 2 - fill in pop-up with required data in the set of 7 fields (most importantly, the ID field) 3 - close the pop-up 4 - search for new location and add point, etc. Has anyone experienced losing data in this way? It's very strange and is only happening to one user. We've looked at a number of things to see if he's doing anything differently: he's using the same browser as colleagues who don't have issues (Chrome) He is not using a filter on the point data The other thing to mention is that he normally clicks off the point right after adding it, then clicks it again to display the pop-up of the attribute data, and they appear correctly. It's just that occasionally later the attribute data (or a portion of the data) disappear. Very strange! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Matt

Hi - I recently created a relatively large tile package in ArcGIS 10.1 desktop and shared it via my organization's ArcGIS Online account. i'd like to now publish that tile package as a service, which I have done in the past with other tile packages. Unfortunately, it seems to publish some of the tiles but then stop, without any sort of additional message. I see that .06% of the tiles are generated, and I can go into 'manage tiles' and see which ones have generated, but I can't get it to generate any more. It published all (1) tiles for the first three coarsest levels, and then decreasing % of tiles down the line to my finest resolution requested: 1:144,448, which generated 352 of 528,581 tiles. I definitely have space for this on our account, and I already created the tile package - just looking to host it in our account. Any suggestions? Thanks! Matt

Hello all, I have recently begun a project working with a colleague to make additions to a point shapefile that I have now uploaded to ArcGIS.com. The shapefile had over 1,400 records when I used ArcGIS 10.1 to share it as a service on our organizational plan. I got no warnings and everything seems to have uploaded fine. However, after two days of adding points, I have opened the feature service in ArcGIS desktop and only see 1,000 records! All of the records are there online, including the 50 or so new points added recently. Is there a limitation in this regard with ArcGIS.com? Again, we have a paid organizational subscription, and i thought that got us around the 1,000 record limitation issue. On a separate note, i'm wondering how to set things up to allow more than one person to make edits to the same feature service at the same time. There will be more than one colleague adding points to this feature service. Is that even possible? I hope so. Thanks all Best, Matt

Hi - I understand from searching the forums that i cannot add a layer package to my web map. This is frustrating. Similarly, i cannot create a feature service from my .mxd if it has a layer package in it. Basically, i would like to create a web map for a colleague to look at and explore that contains the wonderful USA Rivers and Streams layer package. He does not have ArcGIS desktop, so ideally i'd like to put another layer of interest (priority areas) into a web map with the layer package so that he can use it for report development. This doesn't seem to be possible, and there are no similar map services or feature services with the same functionality and detail as USA Rivers and Streams. I have also downloaded the layer package, exported it as a shapefile, and considered uploading that to my ArcGIS Online account. Unfortunately, this greatly exceeds the 1,000 feature limit for shapefiles, and also would not contain the slick labels that are embedded in the layer package. Any thoughts? I thought that the purpose of AGOL was to foster this sort of 'mashing up', but so many of the useful maps to use are stored as layer packages... I guess i'll give him a JPEG (or several) :(. Thanks

Thanks for your reply Matthew. I am using ArcGIS 10.1 (no service pack). I'm not currently running antivirus. The feature class changes to read only while i'm editing - without stopping and starting. I notice it when I go to save. After several successful saves (without stopping editing) it suddenly decides that it's read only. Finally, I am working locally on my laptop. Thanks again for any ideas you may have. Best, Matt

Hi Everyone, This is driving me crazy. I will be working on editing a point shapefile (or feature class in a file geodatabase), adding points and an attribute for the ID as I go along. I can save the edits as I go (and I do), but after a few saves, the shapefile or feature class suddenly becomes read-only - or at least, that is what ArcGIS tells me, "Unable to save edits. Workspace or data source is read only". I never set anything to read only, and after successfully saving my file 3 times (in the latest case) it decides to give me this error on the fourth time! I have tried putting the geodatabase in a different directory, I've tried as a shapefile... Any ideas? This has happened repeatedly with different projects lately. Very frustrating Thanks in advance, Matt

Thanks Jonathon, this sounds quite promising and gets to the issue of my question #1. I will try it out today or tomorrow. As for question #2 - this stems from having a single shapefile with multiple overlapping polygons, and I would love to be able to have a person say they want to see polygon X and see that without all of the overlapping polygons also appearing on the map. The only way I've gotten around that to date is to 'explode' the shapefile and create multiple shapes each composed of a single polygon. Then a user can click on and off the various layers that had been simply separate records in a shapefile. Thanks again. Matt

Thanks Mike. Those look like potential solutions though i don't know how to program in JavaScript. I was hoping there was something out-of-the-box. Best, matt

Hi - I have two questions: 1. How can I do a 'select by attribute' in an ArcGIS Online map that I created and then pan/zoom to that point/polygon and potentially display only that point/polygon? 2. Is there a way in the legend to _easily_ display or hide polygons based on an attribute Background: i have a simple map in which there is one shapefile that I uploaded of several (overlapping) polygons representing focal regions. i would like to set it up so that a user could decide they only want to see one of those polygons, or to be able to search for one of the polygons based on the name. Do I need to 'explode' the original shapefile into dozens of single polygon shapefiles and then upload all of those for this to work? Thanks very much Matt
