Does anyone have any experience sharing file geodatabases on Dropbox? I have been experimenting with dropbox as a way of "networking" two offices. We have several communal projects, were we are required to share data. The problem I am having, is that when one person opens an edit session in a file geodatabase, the other person can still open an edit session. Then both people end up editing the same feature class. Once saved, the first person who started the edit session gets their data saved in the feature class, and the second person ends up loosing their data. Dropbox actually creates its standard duplicate files for the second user. This works well with Word, or other simpler software, but with the complex nature of the file geodatabase, I would not know how to recover the data from the duplicate (copy) files. Either way, my goal would be to get ArcGIS to recognize the lock files and editing locks so that the second person just can't edit. Right now we have to communicate and schedule editing. Has anyone solved such a problem. Are there other online, dropbox like services, that work better for this?

The PGDB seems to work, although I do want to do a bit more testing. And that's fine with me, as with an ArcView license, I don't see any advantages to having my as FGDBs. It works, that's all I care about. The only thing that will be a little bit of a nuisance, is that the file extension is different between the two database forms, so I will have relink to the data in about 100 different projects. Nevertheless, I am still curious. There must be some network configuration that the FGDB is incompatible with, because this doesn't happen to everyone who keeps their data on a network. I am convinced its network incompatibility, because the behavior is on three machines with every FGDB we have (hundreds - one per project). Anyway... Thanks for the advice.

This has now happened to me for two feature classes in two separate geodatabases. For one, I added an additional shape using the polygon feature drawing tool. For one I added two additional shapes via copy/paste from the same feature class. In both cases, new entries were added to the attribute table, when zoomed to the maximum extent I could see the features; however, when I zoom in or try and print the features would not display and would not print. If you flash the features, even though there is nothing in the display window, the shape flashes. If you select the feature, you can see the blue outline. You just can't see any features, except at full extent. The data is on a network NAS drive. Exporting to shape file fixes the problems. However, I have a geodatabase with domain menus, etc, that I keep as a central repository for data, so I would rather not switch back to shape files. Anyone have this issue.

Its good to know I am not the only one having geodatabase/network problems. I too have a FGDB, not too big, that is completely unresponsive. Using the identification tool can take over a minute to get a response. Other, much smaller databases will actually respond faster, however, they can take over a minute to initially open when adding data. I just upgraded it to 10 from 9.2 because of performance issues, which actually made the problem worse. I have worked with support and was told that I should put it on a local drive, where it did function adequately when tested; however, with three of us using this database from different computers and a history of projects mapped to the database, its not really a preferable option to put it on a local drives as the recommend. I would love to hear a solution to this, because for the time being, unless I drastically restructure my work flow and data structure, its not much fun doing GIS anymore.
