Yes you can import S-57 cells into File Geodatabase format, but to determine the best option for your organization's needs, please refer to the following link: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=Types_of_geodatabases Nancy

Is there any documentation available that fully describes the ArcGIS S-57 ENC Data Model, including feature class attributes and domains? So far I have only found the following: ArcGIS Help Library: Nautical data models Gives an overview of the nautical models available. ArcNews Online: The ArcGIS S-57 ENC Nautical Data Model - The linked PDF shows diagrammatically a selection of feature classes, subtypes, attribues and domains - although the names have since changed i think. Thanks, Karl You may want to check out this document, which are the standards on which our data model was built. IHO Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data Publication S-57 Edition 3.1 - November 2000, Appendix A - IHO Object Catalogue Chapters 1 and 2 discusses objects with S-57 attributes. Also, see the Help files at this link: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/S_57_object_finder/0106000000p7000000/ Nancy

I'm also having an issue with trying to export the Geodatabase to S-57. I have to run Update Primitives first but that option is greyed out on the Production Editing toolbar. The Production Mapping and Nautical extensions are turned on. Karl, A product instance is simply the reference to the node in the Product library where the product database is stored and displayed in the Product Library treeview. Each product instance, or NOAA cell has it's own instance, or is stored in its own geodatabase. The desktop production environments: The desktop production environments are more simplified, where data for a single nautical product is created and managed within a single geodatabase. The product library can also manage this production environment if working with an ArcSDE geodatabase. There are two desktop production environments: the desktop production environment for existing products, and desktop production environment for creating new products. The desktop production environment for existing products is used when you need to import existing S-57 cells into your production geodatabase. The desktop production environment for creating new products is used when you need to compile a new S-57 cell into your production geodatabase. This type of deployment of the PLTS for ArcGIS ?? Nautical Solution would be most appropriate for small production facilities, agencies maintaining less than a dozen nautical products and special purpose charts. Please refer to the following link for more information regarding the use of ArcSDE geodatabases: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=An_overview_of_ArcSDE_geodatabase_administration Make sure that you are in an edit session to run Update Primitives...you must start an edit session to run the tool. Karl, Make sure that the Production Mapping and Nautical extensions are turned on. To do this you simply go to Customize on the Standard toolbar, click on extensions, and make sure that both the Production Mapping and Nautical extensions are turned on. If this doesn't do the trick, let me know and we'll trouble shoot further, K? 😉 Nancy Karl, Where you able to verify that the extensions were active?? I hope that you are able to proceed without further issues. Please let me know if how things are going. Sincerely Yours, Nancy

I'm trying to import S-57 files into a geodatabase using the S-57 to Geodatabase tool. Within ArcMap, I create a new file GDB and then create a Feature Dataset. I then right click on the feature dataset and select Import > S-57 to Geodatabase and I get the following error: "There was a problem loading the product configuration file" Where do I set this configuration file and what is the likely problem? I'm new to the Nautical Solution, and it seems like a steep learning curve. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Hello...and I'd be glad to assist if I can. In the Install location there will be an XML file named NAUTICAL_ENC_TEMPLATE_VXXXXXXXX_GX.XML, which should be located at <Install directory>\PLTS\Nautical\ENC\Schema\Workspace . You will create the file GDB and then import this schema into your database, this will create the dataset for you, and set all the configuration files needed to import the ENC cell into the database. Hope this is helpful....and please let me know if you need further assistance. Nancy

The CDR Owner connection property is to give non-admin SDE connections the ability to create products using the Enterprise workflow. This property is to be set by someone who has the SDE admin connection. Once they set this property the admin connection properties are stored in the CKB_File table and are referenced by Populate when creating replicas by non-admin users. With SQL Express, everyone is automatically the Admin or Data owner so there is no need to set the property.

Hi, I'm new to the Product Library. I'm trying to setup the NIS datatbase following these links. Setting up the Nautical product library http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Setting_up_the_Nautical_product_library_in_an_ArcSDE_environment/0106000000r4000000/ Setting up the NIS database http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Setting_up_the_NIS_database/0106000001n7000000/ Everything works fine until Defining the Central Database Repository Workspace - Step 11. After clicking the ... button for Set CDR Owner Workspace, a message box says that "FrameworkEngine.CKBFile.Input Name string has exceeded the length limit of the field"(attached jpg). Does anybody encounter this problem? What does the Set CDR Owner Workspace actually do? Thanks in advanced. Amy Chang Amy, There is a character limit of 32, can you please verify that the name of the selected workspace does not exceed this limit?

Hi, I would like to implement nautical solution in the enterprise production environment(a central database and several production databases). These links talk about nutical production environments and data models. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Nautical_production_environments/0106000002m1000000/ http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//01060000022v000000 I need to output DNC, ENC, and paper charts. However, the NIS data model is based on S-57 feature objects. Does the NIS supprot DNC production? Is it possible to implement NIS for both DNC and ENC productions? Any info on this would be appreciated. Amy Chang DNC is not supported in enterprise. There are two main things to understand regarding this. One is that DNC production has never been supported in enterprise and there are no plans to do so. Second, no one we know of has developed a conversion of S-57 objects to DNC VPF data. There was a ??harmonization? group that looked into it, but it was basically deemed not feasible. Since VPF data is slowly being phased out, no one seems interested in mapping ENC to DNC or vice versa. DNC production would have to be a completely separate implementation in the desktop environment.

James, Loading that many cells in bulk into an NIS it is not recommended practice due to memory consumption. Each cell imported into the NIS has an import version created as well, and these must be reconciled and posted one at a time to Default. Recommended practice would be to import the cells in batch, but only perhaps 5-10 cells at a time at the most to avoid issues with maxed out memory in both the import phase and the posting phase. Also it would be so much easier to keep up with the list of import versions if there were only a few at a time to post then 880 of them to deal with at once.

Admiralty charts ?? do you mean HCRF? If so, that is a 3rd party extension that reads the files into ArcMap. Do you have the Esri Nautical Solution installed?

I would like to use S-57 chart data in the ArcGIS to produce a DEM for research purposes. As a test, I have used the geodatabase model to import Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) .000 files from the NOAA Coastal Services Center. I am now trying to purchase S-57 ENCs for my study site in Brazil. These are not available for free and the vendors are requesting an 'ENC permit number'. From what I could understand they use this permit number to encrypt the data so that it can be viewed only in the correspondent software from which it was obtained. They can not sell such ENCs without the permit number. Does ArcGIS have an ENC permit number that I can provide to the vendors? Thanks in advance, Conrado ??Esri is working with the IHO and other business partners to provide our users with the ability to read S-57 datasets that are encrypted using the S-63 standard. Esri suggests that you contact the hydrographic office associated with the encrypted data directly to request an unencrypted version. Please let Esri know that you are only able to get encrypted S-57 data for your projects by contacting us at nautical@esri.com so we may continue to build our case for IHO to change their policy.?
