Thanks Neil! For me as an Oracle developer, the automatic creation of the spatial index is not a feature but a bug Your reply has triggered me to look at the arcpy.env settings and initial test show that maintainSpatialIndex does the trick arcpy.env.maintainSpatialIndex = True It's a bit counter-intuitive, but it looks like arcpy.env.maintainSpatialIndex = True actually means: leave the spatial index status unchanged and if none exists, don't create one. Regards, Rob

Hi, We are using arcpy.Append_management to import shape files into existing tables in an Oracle database. For some reason Append_management automatically creates a spatial index after the append. We don't want this behaviour. How can we disable the automagical creation of a spatial index? Thanks, Rob

Hi, I am using arcpy.Append_management to load data from a dbf file on a Windows server into an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database. The dbf file is encoded in we8mswin1252, the database is in al32utf8. The special charaters are not inserted correctly into the database, é for instance becomes , I have tried to set the NLS_LANG settings in the Windows environment, but this does not help. I have tried to alter the session using arcpy.ArcSDESQLExecute, but this also does not seem to work. How can I control the codepage or characterset conversion when using Append_management? Thanks, Rob

Thanks for your reply Jake! These feature classes are in an Oracle database and are >25GB in size. Creating a physical copy of the data and would take a lot of space and time. In my understanding, a feature dataset is merely logical layer in the SDE administration. When we use ArcCatalog to move a feature class into a dataset, the actual Oracle tables are not affected. Only the SDE administration (e.g. gdb_items, gdb_itemrelationships) is changed. Is it possible to duplicate this ArcCatalog behaviour in Python? Thanks, Rob

Hi, We are using ArcGIS 10.0. We have several existing feature classes that we want to add to a feature dataset. Of course you can drag and drop the feature classes in the dataset, but our requirements dictate that all changes must be scripted. Is it possible to use a toolbox to move a feature class into a feature dataset? I have tried arcpy.Rename_management(r'feature_class', r'feature_dataset\feature_class'). This does not give an error and returns the text <Result 'feature_dataset\feature_class'>, but nothing actually happens. Looks like a bug to me... Thanks! Rob
