Hello, Thanks for the response. The dissolve part works fine. However, while splitting the dissolved line, it seems as if the splitting operation is being terminated when it comes across a break in the line. (My network has gaps/break in between.) The output, instead of containing several parts of specified length, contains only of two parts. The first part has one short segment that begins at the beginning of the dissolved line and breaks at the first gap after the beginning. The second part is the remaining big chunk of the dissolved line.

I have a massive road network polyline shapefile. The road segments are severely fragmented. I want to merge these several thousands of fragments into a single long line and then split the resulting line into segments of uniform length, say, one mile. I approached this problem first by using the merge tool in editor toolbar. It asks me to "choose the feature with which other features will be merged". It seems that I have no control over the list of features from which I have to choose from. I select a feature nonetheless and perform the merge. A single line is then created. The real problem starts while trying to split this newly created line. I use the split tool in the editor toolbar. I specify the length of split and it splits only the feature I selected earlier while merging. Can anyone suggest a method to solve my problem.

I am using ArcMap 10.2.2 on a machine that runs Windows 10. When I try to access the 'Search' feature it simply does not work. Nothing happens when I click on the search button. Besides this, whenever I try to add a basemap to the work space, ArcMAp crashes without warning. The last time I was able to use these two features without trouble was about a month ago. After that, I have tried using them for the first time yesterday and they refuse to work. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Dear Mr.Patterson, I have used both the methods suggested in this thread to finish my task. They yielded slightly different end-results. Ms. Strauch's method did not include the information about the polylines which did not have any poins in proximity. Since my professor asked for a color coded map, Ms. Strauch's method will not fully serve my purpose. However, I did not face this problem with Mr.Richard Fairhurst method, the result of that method included all polylines regardless of having points located within the search distance. This method worked best for me. There are no other differences that I could observe. Thank you, Raghu.

Miss Strauch, It worked, this is exactly what I am looking for! Thank you so much for taking such pains to explain the process to me. I really appreciate it ma'm. Here is a screen-shot, I have drawn a red box around the specific part of results I am interested in. Thanks again!

I apologize for being ambiguous. Let me elaborate. When I used the 'Generate Near Table' tool, I specified certain search distance and unchecked the 'Find closest feature only' option. So in the output table, I get the list of all points located within the search distance from each line, along with their ranks. For example if there are 10 points within a distance of 100 feet from a line (Whose FID is say, 15). I get 10 new rows (all related to this line with FID 15), in each row is the rank for every one of those 10 points. Perhaps, this picture will explain what I am trying to say more effectively, This is how it is supposed to work right? However, I only need the count of those points, not the ranks and the extra rows they bring along. I need a simplified table which says a line with so-and-so FID has these many number of points located within a distance of 100 feet from it. Now, how can I get something like this? The table I posted along with my question is meant to serve as an example of what I am trying to obtain, I made it in excel, it is no product of ArcMap.

I want to obtain the count of point features existing within a certain distance from a line feature. I only need the count, the output table I would like to see should look something like shown in the table below. I have tried using the generate near table tool, but the output in that case will have to be manually simplified to meet my requirements. Can anyone suggest me an easier way to generate an output in the format I tried to describe? FID Line_Feature_ID Count of Point Features within the search distance 0 1 23 1 2 8 2 3 19 3 4 526 4 5 68 5 6 3

Mr. Patterson, thank you so much for taking the time to help me sir. I have tried everything you suggested with no success. However, I have made another startling discovery! This problem of crashing is not just with the 'Generate Near Table' tool but with every other tool in the Arc Toolbox! Do you have any idea why something like this might happen sir? Also, the search feature in ArcMAp is unresponsive. Update: I was able to partially fix this problem by unchecking the 'enable background processing' option in the 'Geo-processing Options'. I can now use the Arc Toolbox without crashing the program. However, the search feature still does not work. When I click on the search button nothing happens at all.

Dear Mr. Patterson, The files are in the same coordinate system. In fact, I have created one of these shapefiles from the other one. There is no error message at all, the program abruptly closes. I have later tried to use the tool on a different set of shapefiles, also with same coordinate system , only to witness the crash once again with no warning.

Every time I try to use the 'Generate Near Table' tool, it crashes and closes the ArcMap 10.2.2 along with it. Both the Near feature and the Input features are point shapefiles. Can anyone suggest a remedy for this problem?

Hi everyone, I have a shapefile containing 300 point features. In another shapefile there are several hundred polygon features. My goal is to calculate and record the distances between each one of those points and all the polygons which are located within a two mile radius around the point. I must repeat this process for all the 300 points separately. Can anyone outline the procedure for accomplishing this task? Thanks, Raghu.
