Greetings all, I'm currently using this ESRI written rule to create possible building development models and am trying ti use use a transparency effect to differentiate between existing buildings and the possible developments. I'm using "Footprints" as the start rule. However, the transparency slider has no affect on generated models. Have any of you used this functionality successfully? If so what how were other parameters set that may alter this function? It certainly seems simple enough function so I'm curious if I've set a parameter that renders the transparency inoperable. Scott Update: It turns out the original script is missing one line to enable transparency in the Footprint start rule. Add this line as shown in bold below to correct: # This extrudes the footprint shape (for each unit if multiple units) up to the height of the full mass. # Incoming parameters idx and n refer to the separate units (rather than floors as seen later in the rule). Footprint(idx,n) --> set (material.opacity, Transparency) alignScopeToAxes(y) s('1,0,'1) t(0,Elevation-scope.elevation,0) Foundation t(0, foundationHeightAdjusted, 0) report("Building, Footprint Area (m2)", geometry.area) report("Parcel, Coverage (%)", geometry.area/Lot_Area*100) extrude(getHeight(idx,n)) Envelope sg

While configuring both the Branding section and the About widget within the jewelry box theme, I'm unable to insert a simple small image. I've edited, examined and resaved within Photoshop as PNG, GIF and JPG formats to no avail; I continually get an "Invalid file type" error. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Scott

Greetings, I realise this is old but I just had a similar issue/same error after reading lat long data from a spread sheet. The resolution was in to insert CsmapReprojector after the reader to reproject before writing out the new data set. Worked like a charm. Scott

Hi ! Glad you found a workaround. Not all is good yet with the GDB import/export. Some things also need to be fixed in the libraries we have access so far. This will gradually become better. 🙂 RAM : Nope, the visual quality is independent of that. What makes CE screenshots look good is usually : - Ambient Occlusion - Shadows and especially: - setting the Scene Layer settings, such as : * sun direction * AO settings * shadow intensity * .. Additionally, setting your materials you create with CGA, such as specularity or reflectivity. Hope this helps. 🙂 Thanks for the info. I'll make the adjustments that I can and see if I can get my RAM boosted. Scott

Thanks for the advise Matt. I tried as you suggested but got the same result. As a workaround, rather than importing to a new workspace/project I simply copied the test fgdb into an existing workspace data folder, opened that project and then added the data from the newly added test fgdb. This method worked without a problem so I then added my initial fgdb which has many more features classes and that worked also. So I've managed to get around the issue and start working with my own data, just not the way I thought it should. CE still doesn't "import" into a new project. It's all good for now I guess since I've got it working and won't be spending more time trying to force it to work correctly just to prove to myself that it will. RAM: Yes, hopefully that will be increased soon. Will the addition of RAM as well as moving to 64 bit Windows improve the actual visual quality of screen rendering? On my machine I've tried to recreate one of the screen shots in the 3D City:Create City Features tutorial and the quality of my scene doesn't look nearly as good. Scott

Are you using the Advanced trial version? you can't import gdb with the basic I think. Also your inernal RAM might be a little low for running CE, although the file you posted is so small that it shouldn't matter. Yes, I'm using the advanced trial and I agree that the file is so small that can't possibly be the be the issue. Scott

Greetings, I'm just getting into the trial of CE 2012 and am having an issue getting my data into a project. I've gone through data prep and created a fgdb (CityEngine2013.gdb) with various 3d feature classes of points, lines and building polygons for creating a our city. While importing the fgdb within in a new project and selecting the correct coordinate system of the fgdb (NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N EPSG:26917) hitting 'ok', CE simply crashes without any sort of error provided. I've checked the coord system of all feature classes within the fgdb and they are all the same and are system available, not custom. For testing, I've now removed all but one point feature class with very few attribute fields to be sure it wasn't bloated data causing the problem; got the same result. When I re-open CE, the project has actually been created with all it's folders appearing in the Navigator, however in the data folder there is only the "images_CityEngine2013.gdb" subfolder; nothing is being imported. In the error log there's no actual error simply the message "The workspace exited with unsaved changes in the previous session; refreshing workspace to recover changes." This is added each time I try. Note: I've changed the workspace from the default to another drive's folder which should hardly matter since I have all permissions on the drive. I've attached the fgdb witih the one feature class that I've been testing. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. All the tools you have described are designed to work against other features. Its easy for a human to make the call on what the two end points should do when you're trying to trim or snap dangles from the same feature, but less so for tools or a topology fix that has no guidelines. This could be improved. You could try the Feature To Polygon GP tool which will create polygons from your lines and snap dangles with a tolerance. In the case of undershoots the two ends are moved to a midpoint. If you need to keep the building lines, you could then use the Polygon To Line GP tool, which means you wont see overshoots. Hi Sean, The Feature to Polygon tool is what I started with initially, however, I was missing too many polygons in the end to use the result so I wanted to go through the entire data set to be sure I got the best result I could. I experimented with various processes and tolerances and decided the best result would be to manually edit the line feature class from a certain point before recreating polygons. I've zipped through over 3200 errors fairly quickly with my own workflow but was wondering why I couldn't get the toplogy error tool to work. Now I know it just won't do what I expected. Thanks, Scott

I'm probably missing something and if so I apologize but it looks like you have two different "snap" issues. In the case of manual editing with lines, if you are adding to a line with the sketch tool you need to have The Edit Sketch box in the snapping environment checked to get it to snap to itself, but if you are selecting and moving a pre-existing vertice then up in the Layer window you need to have your layer's Vertex or End box's checked. If the case of automatic cleanup, you might consider using the Integrate tool, which functions a bit like the coverage clean in terms of making vertice's coincident. Do it on a copy since the changes are made in the layer instead of producing a new one, and you may want to play around with different tolerances to get your vertices to "snap" without moving others too much. One other thought, there are snap, sticky move and tolerance settings that affect your work, and if one of them is set large you have to move your vertice beyond that tolerance to get it to move. The Editor - Options settings for snap and sticky move are in pixels and hence how closely you are zoomed in can affect your snap/sticky "distance". Hi John, I'm not actually adding new features and I'm aware of the Edit Sketch Box options. I've used Integrate to get to the point I'm at now without creating too many extra errors as well as investigated and set all the settings you've mentioned. I'm simply cleaning up the mess that's left over. The Fix topolgy Error Tool would probably be the fastest tool to use if it worked correctly but at this point I'm going to plug away at moving each vertex using the edit tool. I believe it to be a bug with the tool but hopefully someone can prove me wrong. Thanks for the help. Scott

You can use the Feature Vertices to Point tool in Data Management toolbox to create points at the beginning, then snap your ends to those points. Alternately it would probably work to create a duplicate of your line file and snap to that. Thanks for the idea Trish. I've spent so much effort trying to make the proper tool function that I wasn't thinking of workarounds. I tried both of your suggestions and still no luck getting the topological error tool to snap to the extra features. I can get it to snap to a feature 10 metres away on the same layer and the addtional layers from your suggestion, but not the vertex that's less than 1 metre away. It keeps returning "Snap dangle error failed." It's almost as if it searches, finds the other end point of the current feature first, which it can't snap to, then returns the error before searching and finding the vertex of the additional layer. If I create a new seperate feature within the specified snap distance I can successfully snap to that using the tool. Just a bug witht the Fix Topology Error Tool I suppose. Thanks for your suggestions and time. Scott

Greetings all, Is there a way to snap an existing feature's end point to its starting point without manually moving one of the vertices? I'm currently editing/cleaning up building footprints in a line feature class to eventually create building polygons. I've created a topology and am now editing all leftover dangles and overshoots. Most building footprints consist of a single feature. Where I have a small gap at a corner, the start and end vertices of the feature need to be snapped together. I've tried to running the snap tool from the editing toolbox and nothing happens, I assume because the feature won't snap to itself. ( I also tried the trim tool before creating the topology which didn't work either and I'm assuming for the reason that a feature cannot be used to trim itself. ) In snap options classic, Edit sketch vertices is toggled "on". When using the fix topology error tool then the snap option I get "Snap dangle error failed" My current method is to set the snapping environment appropriately, then for each situation where there's a gap, manually move one of the vertices so it snaps to the other. Creating a coverage would do this but isn't there a better way other than creating a coverage then bringing it back into to a feature class? Scott

What does "MID()" do? You need to use the equivalent Oracle SQL function. - V You were right on. The equivalent in Oracle is substr (sub string). I'm pulling out values from the string in the first three postions when they're '?', which ever value I want. '7' in this case. The revised query was: substr (StationRunOrder,1,1) = '7' OR substr (StationRunOrder,3,1) = '7' Thanks. Scott

Greetings all, Within ArcMAP using a feature class in a personal GDB, I originally used this query for selecting from a text field using the "select by attributes" tool and it work correctly: MID (StationRunOrder,1,1) = "4" OR MID (StationRunOrder,3,1) = "4" Running the same query on this features class after it was imported to SDE the same query returns the error: There was an error with expression. Underlying DBMS error[ORA-0094: "4": invalid identifier] The fields I'm selecting from are defined the same in both cases. I suspect it's simply a syntax issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Scott
