Ok, so the Low to High labels are not calculated by ArcMap, but rather by the user performing editing in layer properties / symbology tab? Is that correct? And the reference to quartiles and the quartiles math in my example, is that also completed manually by the user?

I have done that, and Style is not a step in the Wizard. So, I continued to click Next and then Finish in the Legend Wizard to insert a "generic" Legend. I then opened the Legend's properties and opened Style in the Items tab, but I did not see the style referenced above in the list. Please provide further details of the steps to take. Thank you.

Hello, Please see the attached map. For security, only the point layers are visible. The small dots represent customers. The large asterisks represent WiFi hotspots. As you can see, the symbology is muddled and it's difficult to differentiate the layers. I've tried changing the symbols of each layer, but the problem persists. I've tried converting the customer points to raster, but the result does not represent the data meaningfully. The point density and kernel density tools offer possible solutions, but I'd prefer to not have to represent the customer data that way. What other methods can be used to display two point layers on one map so that the data of each layer is easily viewed and understood? Thank you.

Yes, the layer's labels are turned on, and the expression appears to be syntactically correct. I also tried Xander's suggestion: def FindLabel([DISTRICT]): dct = {1: "Bob Hope", 2: "Bob Costas", 3: "Bob Marley", 4: "Bobby Bowden", 5:"Bob the Clown"} district = int([DISTRICT]) but same result: expression is validated, but with blank labels. Ok, I've got Advanced checked and Python for parser. That validates the expression. But in the Expression Verification window, the Sample Text String and Sample Label are blank. When I press OK to get out of Expression Verification / Label Expression / Layer Properties windows, my map updates, but without labels; they are all blank. I entered def FindLabel ( [District] 😞 if District == 1: return "Bob Hope" but the response to clicking the Verify button was "Carriage returns are not allowed in simple expressions." I took out the extra "=" in front of "1", but the Verify response was the same.

How is the Python expression written (i.e. what is the syntax?) to change a field's labels from its unique values to custom labels? The field I'm working with is DISTRICT. Its unique values are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. On my map, I want the districts to be labeled with their supervisors' names, instead of with their numbers.

Ok. I think I'm reading too much into this, and overlooking the simplicity. To clarify, if I'm running the kernel density tool, and using 100 has my cell size and square miles as area map units, then the cell area is 10000 square miles? (per your first reply, cell area = cell size squared)

Considering this statement, "suppose we use an output cell size of 0.5 kilometers, and we see that one cell receives a value of 16 crimes per square kilometer. Since the area of the cell is 0.25 square kilometers (0.5 km * 0.5 km = 0.25 km 2 ), we can multiply the density by the area to get an expected count of 4 crimes (16 crimes/km 2 * 0.25 km 2 = 4 crimes)...." ....does the square root of Cell Size (Kernel Density tool) equal the area of each cell (I'm using square miles for Area Units)?
