Hey guys, The Raster to Point tool worked perfectly, but only if the .lyr has associated "data". For example, a Landsat image .tiff will convert to a point shapefile, but a esri world imagery .lyr will not. Interesting. I had to convert to a shapefile since I will eventually take the interstection of those points from the pixels of the .lyr with another shapefile. The Landsat image was very low resolution, yielding a point every 30 meters or so, which is not as accurate as I would like. Does anyone know if MODIS imagery files are readibly available somewhere on the web? Thanks again for all the help! : )

Thank you very much. I was able to convert a landsat image to a point shapefile, which was very nice. (68 million points!) Unfortunately from what I read, most .lyr files can not be converted to a point feature if they don't have associated "data". Hence I was not able to convert a higher resolution esri world imagery .lyr file to a point feature. I would imagine the number of points would be astronimcal, unless there is a way to specifically choose a portion(crop tool or something of the like?) of the .lyr or other image you want to convert to a shapefile. At any rate this has been very informative and I thank you all for your assitance. : )

Would anyone happen to know how to convert a .lyr or raster image to a point shapefile? I've heard that .lyr conversions to points isn't possible in older software, but I was wondering if this changed at all. What I eventually want to do is a pixel by pixel analysis, so I would need to convert every pixel of a layer or raster image(landsat 7 image) to a point. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Alright Thank you guys so much! That did the trick. Would you guys also happen to know how to convert a .lyr or raster image to a point shapefile? Hey everyone, What tool can one use that tells you if a point lies within a shape? (Point shapefile with point that is within a shape polygon's area.) Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, I'm new to the world of GIS so I was somewhat confused when I saw the option of choosing from either a geographic coordinate system or projected coordinate system in arcMap. My first layer is a Landsat 5 image that reads as being in WGS_84_UTM_zone_15_N, which is a projected coordinate system in arcMap. I am trying to display a shapefile over this Landsat image, but the shapefile is in WGS84 which is a geographic coordinate system in arcMap. The input for the shapefile is in lat/long without regard to projection. When I load the shapefile layer, arcMap gives me a warning that the coordinate systems differ, but the shape file still appears to be in the correct place. So my main questions are: 1. What is the difference a geographic coordinate system and a projected coordinate system? 2. The shapefile is in WGS_84 and the Landsat 5 image is in WGS_84_UTM_15. Will this incorrectly affect the placement of the shapefile, or can I simply ignore this warning? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, Does anyone know where I could find Infrared image layers? I've heard landsat 5 may have some IR data, but is there any other data that is freely available? I'm specifically looking for IR images for western Minnesota. Thanks!
