Hello All, I used the Publish Routing Services utility successfully with my own network data. The routing utilities were configured and everything is working as it should. I want to understand what is the process for updating the network dataset: should I simply re-run the tool against the updated dataset? Should the updated dataset have the same name? I'm also interested in publishing a second network dataset with different data. Will running this tool with the second dataset generate another set of routing utilities or will everything be overwritten? I am using the ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8.1, configured as a single machine setup. Thanks, Shahar.

Hello all, Using ArcGIS Server 10.2.1, we deployed our publicly open internet site using two different IIS servers - each with a Web Adaptor - and a single ArcGIS Server behind a firewall. The incoming requests are managed by a load balancer that sends them to either one of the IIS servers. Our Web Adaptors are named "arcgis" and "arcgis2", and our REST services library is in the form of site.domain/arcgis/rest/services and site.domain/arcgis2/rest/services. Something doesn't work as expected. Both IIS servers are up, but when we are trying to reach them we get a 404 error for one while the other works fine. A few minutes later they switch, and we get a 404 error for the previously working Adaptor, while the former 404 Adaptor now works fine. This repeats itself continuously. As a result we have difficulties with consuming our REST services (for example, in ArcGIS Online). What can I check to find where is the problem? Thanks, Shahar.

EDIT: Summary and a decent solution: 1. Working in a database that is not geo-enabled, you may have some difficulties keeping your primary-key fields in ArcGIS tools' results. 2. If your data doesn't have the ArcGIS maintained OBJECTID field, ArcGIS will look for another candidate. 3. If you have a not-null - unique - integer field (like many primary keys), ArcGIS will treat it as the OBJECTID and will define it's data type as "Object ID". You cannot tell ArcGIS to ignore that field. 4. The problem with this is that when you run a tool that creates a new Feature Class / Table from your data, ArcGIS populates the OBJECTID field with new values, making you lose the option to do joins based on that field. 5. Here are a few workarounds: a. Create a view from your data in your database and run the tool against the view. ArcGIS doesn't recognize the field in the view as OBJECTID. b. Don't choose integer for your primary key field. Use numeric, float, etc. c. Add your data to ArcGIS as a query table with a virtual key. Note that there may be a problem if you're using "Database Connection" - Try using "OLE DB Connection".

Thanks Jake, I'm using versioning. If I understand correctly, doing delete/append will copy all the current features (the deleted ones) into the Delete table and copy all the new features into the Adds table. That sounds like a waste of resources. I was thinking that maybe I can treat the update package as a new version and reconcile it with the original dataset. That way, only the changed features will be written to the D/A tables. How do I do something like that? And will it affect archiving?

Hello all, Part of my organisation's gis data is stored in an SQL Server Geodatabase, within a single dataset that contains dozens of simple feature classes. Twice a year we receive an update package that contains the latest version of those feature classes. I used to overwrite the existing data with the new package while keeping the old data in a File Geodatabase. I want to be able keep the data in our SQL Server Geodatabase and to able to see how the data looked like at a certain point in the past. I thought about using Geodatabase archiving but I'm not sure how to insert the new update package. Should I delete the rows of the feature classes and then append the new data? Should I use "Load data"? Is there some other way? ****************** Technical info: 1. SQL Server 2012. 2. ArcGIS 10.2.1. 3. The new data doesn't change schema / feature class structure. 4. Most of the data doesn't change at all. 5. The new data contains all sorts of changes: added features, deleted features, feature-shape changes, attribute changes and so on.

These are good suggestions. I indeed tried lowering the candidate score and it gave me exactly what I wanted. It even keeps parity! I think that the dissolve method wouldn't quite work for me since I also need to match house numbers that are completely out of street range (eg., matching house number 2030 to a street that has only a range of 2-10). Obviously, the geocoding results aren't accurate at all, especially since the out-of-range house number probably comes from a typo, but that's another story... Thank you kimo and jborgion!

Hello all, I have a dual-range street data. I want to build an address locator with ArcGIS 10.2.1 that will be able to match the closest house number. Take, for example, a case in which the left part of the street has the following segments: 2-12, 20-40, 50-80. The locator will match the house number 6 without a problem but I want to match also house number 16 that does not exists in the data. In this case the match will be to either house number 12 or 20 that are the closest house numbers in the data. I can partially do it by lowering the spelling sensitivity but than I will have a problem with the street name. Is there something that I can change in the locator style in order to accomplish what I need? Also, I would like to maintain parity (matching odd numbers to odd-numbers street side) it that's possible. Thanks, Shahar.

Hello all, We're migrating from an Enterprise Oracle database to SQL Server. Neither are GEOdatabases. The tables within contain ID fields which are Integer primary keys. ArcGIS recognizes those keys as datatype Object ID, but only in SQL Server. Whenever I run a GIS tool that generates a new table (import/export; batch geocoding; etc.) ArcGIS creates a new OBJECTID field in the result table while leaving out the original ID field. Needless to say, the original ID is crucial for later analysis, specially since the new OBJECTID field has no real meaning (just ascending numbers). The solution was to create a query table, add to it a virtual key field, and run the different tools on the query table. I tried it but got the error "000055: Cannot create a Query Table for this workspace". I was surprised to learn that query tables cannot be created in a database connection, only in an OLE DB connection (or geodatabase - irrelevant to my case). So, in order to run GIS tools while keeping my original table ID in SQL Server, I had to do the following: 1. Find the well-hidden "Add OLE DB Connection" button on ArcCatalog. 2. Create an OLE DB connection. 3. Make a new query table from my original table while adding a virtual key. 4. Run the tool. There must be a better way to do this! Some points for esri to consider: 1. Why only SQL Server recognizes the ID fields as Object ID datatype? Why not Oracle? 2. Can you make an option for not changing the object id field values? If not, can't you add a new OBJECTID field while keeping the original Object ID datatype field in the results? 3. Why can't I create a query table in a database connection? Why must I go to OLE DB connection? 4. Why does the "Add OLE DB Connection" button exists only in ArcCatalog? Why not in ArcMap as well? Tech Specs: Oracle 11g SQL Server 2012 ArcGIS Desktop Standard 10.2.1 Best regards, Shahar.

The installation process gave indeed the necessary permissions to the account. My SysAdmin just asked me out of curiosity why the account needed such a high-level permission and I couldn't find an ESRI documentation which explains it. I'm guessing the account needs to be able to delete files regardless of file permissions, but I'm not sure.

Hello, My ArcGIS Server 10.2.1 is running under a domain account for the server account. I've been asked by the system admin why does the server account need full-control permissions to folders such as <ArcGIS for Server installation directory>\framework or the directories folder. Couldn't it just be given a read/write permission instead? Thanks, Shahar.

Hello all, I've been thinking about the "right" way to work with geodatabases: I'm a GIS analyst and my everyday work consists of delivering different GIS products (Maps, Geographic calculations, etc.) for different projects. The data for the products also comes from different sources. I am currently making a file geodatabase for each product that contains the results and the temporary layers. That FGDB resides within a project-specific folder that also contains the MXD file and other files needed for the product (Excel files, Images, etc.) Wouldn't it be more efficient to put all the products for all the projects in one large FGDB, divided into Feature Datasets? How big can a FGDB get before the performance starts to decline? I also have access to an Oracle geodatabase (using ArcSDE). Would that be a better choice? I'm curios to know what you think. Thanks, Shahar.

Hello Anna, Thank you very much! I changed a few lines in the code and it works. 🙂 I'm learning now how to run it outside of ArcMap, as you suggested. A question: Since I have many routes, there may be a case in which a route between two points isn't possible. How can I make the code "skip" the problematic route instead of stopping with an exception?

Hello all, I periodically need to calculate the shortest walking distance for over 1.8 million routes (2 points per route). With such a large amount of routes I cannot use the desktop ArcGIS - loading that many locations isn't realistic. What would be the best practice? Creating a python script? Using ArcObjects? Something else? I have been doing the calculations in smaller pieces (100K, more or less) in version 9.x but now, in version 10, I want to improve the process and do it in one "chunk". I have access to a strong workstation (20 GB RAM, 24 cores). How can I utilize all the processing potential? I have no need for hierarchy, restrictions or preserving stop order and all I want is the distance - not the actual routes layer. Any thoughts? Thanks, Shahar.
