Thanks for the great information folks. I'm thinking of making a case to have access to Bing maps from the vehicles... I removed my land, sea, streets, and street names and the tool is quite snappy... If I had access to the Bing hybrid map we'd be in great shape. The entire application just works better with the Bing map vs. my own layers... Wondering, before I try to figure out how to create my content differently based on your descriptions (which would be taking me to the far limits of my GIS experience!), (1) does anyone know the URL address that I would have to have access to in order to connect with the Bing maps? (2) is there a way to limit the viewable area of the basemap? Thanks very much everyone for the support. Invaluable to have this community. James

Hi Folks, I've got ArcGIS Explorer set up the way I want it (minus basemaps, but that's another post) and am having some performance issues. I am working in a disconnected environment with access only to our internal network. My deployment folder contains 27MB of information. The largest files are my streets.dbf (12.5MB), sea.shp (5.5MB), and land.shp (5.5MB) - for a geographically large city (300+ square km's). I have a few (3) large files used by the FeatureLabeler addon (375k to 760k). The rest are smaller files (< 63k) to support 5 shape files containing incident data, 1 hotspot layer, and 1 note. Basemaps have been cleared. Ideally, I???d like to create my own basemaps using my ortho photos but, again, that is another issue I am struggling with and thought I better resolve the performance with what I have first. I???m wondering, are the sizes of my files reasonable? Is the number of items published reasonable? Could it be ArcGIS is still trying to connect with the Internet as I navigate thus slowing me down? The performance I am getting right now is a real issue... Any thoughts and suggestions would be most welcome! James

Is there still this limitation with labels in 1500? I have a shape file containing street names which are attached to short invisible line segments. I can't seem to find where you would turn on labels and then set the source of the text string to pull from the appropriate field... Thanks all. J

Quick one! I'm locking down the functionality in a big way in order to make it as simple as possible for users. In fact, the only button I seem to 'need' on the ribbon is the 'Contents Window' because if the Contents get closed I can't seem to bring it back without the button... If I can remove this button, I can remove the ribbon entirely and save a lot of real-estate. Anyone know a shortcut to bring back the Content Window? Thanks! J

I haven't seen anything about passwords. I'm 'locking' down my maps using using the configuration manager if that helps...

I'm doing the same thing... I've also cleared the basemaps so I don't get the error but didn't realize Explorer may still be attempting to get out to the Internet... I'll be watching to see if you get an answer, would be nice to disable if this is the case.

Thanks Mark, Everything works like a charm. As far as best practice, would you say it's best to push out a shortcut to the config file (.ncfg), or push out a shortcut to the main map file (.nmf) that has the configuration file set within? I like the former option because I can still make updates to the main map file... however, it leaves open the possibility for people to navigate and open the main file directly and make modifications...

Hi Folks, I am trying to deploy maps to our vehicles which will have ArcGIS explorer installed on Panasonic CF-30 Tough-Books. The Tough-Books have access to our network drives from the field (I'm trying to do this without incurring the cost of the server app). I have ArcGIS Explorer running on a Tough-Book in my office but notice that it places locks on all of my shape files... I need to be able to update these shape files... My question is, is there a way to run the application in read-only mode? This is also important because I don't want users to be able to modify the mainfile.nmf anyway... (I need the utility to open with a default configuration each time it is launched - in case users modify visible layers, etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! James

If it helps, I'm trying to deploy on the CF-30 and ArcGIS Explorer was crashing at startup. I updated the video card driver and am good now. So... my point is, it wasn't an issue with the touch screen... at least with the CF-30.
