I'm working in Pro 1.4, and I'm trying to edit a polygon feature. I'm taking the original polygon, and doing a copy/paste to duplicate the feature and move the identical geometry to a different location (for a strip map index). However after the initial paste and moving of the feature, if I try to move/rotate/scale or just modify the feature in any way it does the same to any adjacent features (that touch) in the dataset even though I only have one feature selected (see attachments). Is there something I'm doing wrong?

This seems to work. It's a little unfortunate that I have to set my default page size large enough for a poster map, but if there's no other way around it then that's what I'll have to do. Thanks.

I'm trying to create a Picture Marker Symbol for a state highway shield. I decided on a .emf format, and when I bring it into the map it looks fine (MXD_View.JPG). However, when I export it and open the .pdf there is an issue. When I'm in landscape orientation, the symbols on the right side of the map will only show up as white boxes instead of the picture marker symbol (Landscape_Error_EMF_8_5x11.pdf). This also happens when I'm in different size map (Landscape_Error_EMF_11x17.JPG) However, when I'm in portrait, everything shows up fine (Portrait_Export.pdf). I also tried converting the symbol to a .jpg and a .bmp, but those have the same issue and also show up transparent (JPG_Error.pdf). Any suggestions on what's going on and how to fix it? Maybe there's an alternative way to go about this? Some info to note: I'm running 10.3.1, but this issue happens on my coworker's computer who is running 10.4.1 I've tried playing around with all the .pdf export options with no success (PDF_Options.jpg) I've tried using layer files and shapefiles This happens if I try to insert the shield as a stand-alone picture in the .mxd This happens when I export to jpg

It's tough to say what causes it to hang. I know In my case (and Olivia's, the original poster), this isn't a 100% failure rate (maybe like 50%?), but the cause is very mysterious, and once that .mxd has been shown to be compromised, it's never going to work on attempt 2. The map I was having issues with yesterday only had an ArcGIS basemap, a couple of line features, and a north arrow/scale bar/legend. That's a very simple .mxd that isn't working out. On the flip side, I've had .mxds with tons of data and graphics, transparency, large rasters, etc. that'll work just fine. Once it hangs I have to start my task manager and close the .mxd that way. If it's an .mxd that I know isn't going to work a second time, I just open up a blank .mxd. Once I export my first set of DDPs I'll save and close it, and open it up again. I've recently been in contact with esri support, so we'll see how they deal with it. It's obviously only affecting a small percentage of users, but I'm glad I'm not crazy.

I'm not saying the lock isn't real. I've accidentally exported to an open PDF hundreds of times. This specific issue is with DDP and has nothing to do with locks, at least in my case. Here is the normal DDP Export Progress Bar - Notice the "3 of 5 Pages" Here is what happens on the second attempt - No progress is made, the "1 of 5 pages" will never show up, and it will hang there, for as long as you want to watch it spin. This is the error that happens if you export DDPs to an open file (locked) - The DDP export will proceed as normal until the very end, when it shows this error. You'll never get to this on the second attempt, because it actually needs to export all the pages first, which it won't do. Also, in reply to Kelvin. In my experience with this issue, it doesn't matter which option I choose (all pages, current page, or range), or how many pages are being exported (I've had this issue with 3 total pages, 8.5x11). Whatever you do on that second attempt, it will hang.

I've had the exact same problem since I've upgraded to 10.3. Mike alluded to potential locks, but in my experience this is much more than that. This is at the very least .mxd specific because it happens to most, but not all of my .mxds. I unfortunately don't have any potential solutions. All I've been doing is opening up another blank .mxd, closing the main one after I export, and opening up the same .mxd in the blank one.

Here's what I've gathered on these forums and elsewhere: If you ask any esri employee, they will say that this is not built as a replacement for Desktop. Obviously it's not ready for primetime now, and they don't want to scare existing users, especially with a product that is so raw. It's just another application at your disposal. If you read between the lines, and use a little deductive reasoning, the conclusion is that this there is a pretty good chance that somewhere down the road Pro will be the main application, and Desktop will be phased out. Here Is how I see it: On the ArcGIS Ideas All-Time Leaderboard, the second most popular request is 64-bit Desktop, and the 5th most popular is multiple map layouts. Both are features in Pro. There are a bunch of other features in Pro that new and long-time users love. My guess is that implementing these features in Desktop would be very difficult. As you mentioned, Pro would probably be easier for first-time/casual users to understand. Pro integrates with ArcGIS Online very well, which is a service that esri has pushed hard recently. The only way to easily/smoothly transition users to something so different is to release them side-by-side. That's just speculation on my part, but in my opinion, Pro will become a lot better in future releases. Once it catches enough steam, and matches Desktop's functionality, my guess is that it will become the main product.

I was recently inclined to give ArcGIS Pro another shot for mapping when Video Link : 2516, a presentation about authoring maps with Pro. I am a GIS user who uses ArcGIS Desktop for making maps on a daily basis. I am intrigued by Pro and the implemented functions for mapping. The drawing is fast, anti-aliasing makes features look smooth, and true transparency gives the user added display options. Updating labels in the ribbon and previewing map changes without having to go through multiple dialog boxes is fantastic. Multiple layouts will be a huge help for being able to make multiple maps with the same data. However, in my opinion, there are too many drawbacks for this to be used as a mapping application at the moment. The first (and for me the most important) is the lack of snapping guides. I understand that these are in the works for a future release, but not having the page and elements aligned and spaced consistently is the sign of a novice map maker. I know that there are “Size and Position” tools in the ribbon, but those aren’t very convenient, especially if there are multiple elements that need to be moved. If there is a background offset to an element, the "Size and Position" interface is basically worthless. The next issue is the map surrounds that most people would use in a map (Scale Bar, North Arrow, and Legend). In almost every map I make, I use these elements. When I use these elements, I usually have some sort of background to make these elements stand out. There are some limitations to these element backgrounds. For instance, the legend does not rescale when you resize it (see attachment). I like the ability to do this without having to convert the legend to graphics, but I would still like the option for the legend to rescale (I could not find this functionality). When I make scale bars, I prefer to make the border in the horizontal direction longer than the vertical direction. As far as I can tell, there is no way to do this in Pro. There are a couple of other key features missing in Pro. The extent indicator for inset maps, and Data Driven Pages. The lack of some features wouldn’t be a big issue if there was a way to export the Pro document to Desktop. I understand that because of all the features Pro offers, being able to export to an .mxd would be a pain for developers (or maybe even impossible). The tradeoff is this, if there is a function that I need to create my map, and it’s not in Pro, I need to remake the whole map again in Desktop. This alone is enough to deter me from ever starting a map in Pro, no matter how useful the new features are. Pro has a lot of potential when it comes to mapping, and I don't want this to be interpreted as me thinking Pro will never get there. However, it is my the product that is out there today isn’t sufficient for users who need to map frequently. I welcome anyone to correct me on any of my points or offer any rebuttal. I've only tried it for a few days. This is why I started this page as a discussion. If anyone has any input I'd love to hear it.

There was a webinar today on ArcGIS Pro. If I remember correctly, they said they were planning two more updates to Pro this year. Someone did ask about topology. The presenter said they were "actively" working on it, but I don't remember if he said it was planned in one of those two updates. The replay will be available in the next few days if you really want to know. I would assume they would be hesitant to provide a "roadmap" of sorts, because esri wouldn't want to throw out a time period and fail to meet it. If I recall correctly, the original plan for Pro was to release it alongside 10.3, but that obviously didn't happen.

I can't say I'm familiar with West Virginia GIS Data, but from my experience, there isn't usually an all encompassing parcel dataset available. Counties are usually responsible for their own parcel data, and that's the source you'll usually need to go to. Even a state like Indiana, which has very robust and public GIS dataset isn't 100% inclusive (yet). Some counties don't want to give it up, and some counties are so small in population that they don't even have digital parcel data. There are some exceptions for a region having parcel data, such as the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region which has parcel data for the the 7 county metro area. I hope someone here can point you in a better direction, but it unfortunately may come down to going county-by-county to get the data you want.

That's interesting. I did some testing with individual geoprocessing tools (mostly raster processes). These tools took at least 5 minutes to run, and I found no meaningful differences between Pro and Desktop (<5%).

If your lines are split at the fittings, and you have and Advanced license, you can use the Feature Vertices to Points tool. You can run the tool twice, once with the tool option "Point Type" as "Start" and once with "End". You will then have points that coincide or are very close to your existing points. Then use a spatial join to pull the attributes from the existing points to your newly created points. Then you can use an attribute join to join those back to your line (the Feature Vertices to Points tool retains the original FID so you can join it back). Also, if you don't have an Advanced license, XTools has a tool with that functionality, and there is a free 14 day trial.
