I saved ESRI's imagery base map out as a layer file (from arcGIS Desktop 10.0) because our internet is slow and the base map is faster as a base map layer saved to our server. However when our users load it onto arcGIS Explorer another layer (the parcel layer doesn't show lines). I thought maybe it had something to do with being saved as a layer so I had one user select it from arcGIS Online Basemaps. When she did that, the parcel lines showed up, but she lost the ability to turn on the transportation layer. How can I get my user to be able to have both the ability to turn on the transportation labels within the basemap AND be able to see the parcel lines from another layer? The layer is above the basemap so that is not the issue. Problem resolved. Even though the parcel layer was above the base map layer in the table of contents, it wasn't really above the parcel layer. Manage layers enabled us to move the layer up and cause the lines to show.

Well, apparently it is a permissions issue. Although I'm supposed to have full permissions to the folder it was in. I copied it to my local drive and now I'm able to edit it. I also deleted it from the network drive. So I guess I have create and destroy, but not edit permissions. I'll have to talk to IT about that. Anyway, I'm back in business for the time being.

I created a line shape file and added 24 features to it. Saving edits throughout and then saving edits and stopping editing session to take a break. I closed arcGIS (Version 10) and saved the map document. Upon going back to another editing session, and adding another feature, I'm now getting an error message that it cannot save because of empty geometry or that there is a lock on the file (I've gotten both messages on several occasions). I have done repair geometry several times. I've checked geometry (no errors) a few times. I've started a blank map document, saved it and then tried editing in that document - all to no avail. I have not been able to add a feature since the first session when I created the shape file. I have full permissions to the folder in which the file resides. What else can I try to fix this file - short of starting over.

I think I may know what's happening. The replace sketch is creating a second sketch using the "blueprints" of the first sketch. You need to go into the table and delete the original (after the second is finished). Try it again with the attribute table open and see if it is creating an additional row after you replace sketch. This may be a bug - it's adding an additional rather than replacing, but deleting the original should reveal the sketch you want with the holes which should be there - the original sketch is just obscuring the holes.

Since you are drawing two "holes"... Maybe try finish sketch after one hole, then replace sketch, finish part, and finish sketch again after the second hole is drawn... Not tested - just a thought.

I was wrong. This does not work. Still seeking a solution. If you right click, replace sketch, then finish part, it will not allow you to draw empty area inside of objects, which is what I need to do, it will only allow you to add area to the existing object. Not sure how you are doing this. I just tested and it worked fine to draw an empty middle to create a doughnut. These are the steps I did... Drew rectangle Right Clicked on Finish Sketch ... Right Clicked on replace sketch Right Clicked on Finish Part Drew out doughnut hole in middle Right Clicked on Finish Sketch Worked perfectly:)

There is no option called "replace sketch" when I right click on my object. Nevermind I found it. You have to select the object, then go back to segment tool, then right click. It doesn't work if you select using the edit tool. OK, but if you just hit finish sketch and you realize it right away, you should be able to immediately right-click and replace sketch will be available.

actually if you do "finish sketch" too early you can right click on the sketch and select replace sketch, then click "finish part" and then draw the rest.

The point layer has a template(as far as I can tell) and it is visible. you should be able to tell, because you need to click on the template feature (to select the attribute/feature type) before you click on the map to place your point. as far as the folder your editing session is set to, you do that when you start the editing session, just make sure you either pick the layer specifically or select the folder that you *know* the shapefile is in.

I've never used this feature, so I can't give any insight, but you might try one of these tools. Raster to Point, Raster to Polyline, Raster to Polygon

Hi Teresa, I haven't worked with SPSS, but if you can finish your analysis there, export it out as a dbf or to a geodatabase table. I would then add that exported table to ArcMap. Before you do any joins, you would need to fix the ID field from 1 to 001 for example. If your ID field is in text to do the join to the shapefile, you are in luck. In the newly added field, make sure it is a text field. Use the field calculator on the new text field. Make the expression <yournewfieldname> = "00"&[ID field]. This will append the 00 to 3. If your field is a numeric field, may want to try formatting in the field properties. Hope this helps. Eric however this would cause double digits to be incorrect changing "13" to "0013" when it might need to be "013" you can do this to fix the code given above. <yournewfieldname> = right("00"&[ID field],3)

What about joining the table and then using the field calculator to get the contents of the fields from the table. Then you could remove the join if you don't want it there. As for you comment about being able to paste vertically in 9.3.1 - I never tried it, but based on the way .dbfs work (and the attribute table is a .dbf file) I don't know how you were able to do that in any version.

Dear ArcGIS Community: I built a For loop using ModelBuilder to create inundation polygons which works well but I can only long integers (0,1,2,&c.) in the starting, ending and step values of the loop. What I really need is a double so that I can increment in 0.15m. can someone please explain how to change the long integer value in the For loop to a double? Thanks Tony For loops can only do integers, but you may manipulate the data to get what you want by multiplying the loop value by some number or just setting up another counter. I don't use model builder that often so I'm not sure how you might accomplish this. each time through the loop multiply .15 * loop counter.
