I work for a GIS center at a public university. We are looking at creating an AR app that would allow students to view buildings in front of them through their phones and pull up information about each building. Any tips on where to get started and what programs we should use?

Hi @EmmaSchwartz ,

There is not a single "standardized" way to this, so you need to find out a bit what works best for you.

  • Get the buildings inside of CityEngine
    • e.g. use Get Map Data
    • Model them with the shape drawing & push pull inside of CityEngine
    • Create them in another 3D app and import
  • Export to Unreal
    • Center Model to 0/0/0
  • Create an AR App in Unreal
    • You will need some way to overlap 3D model & camera correctly (scale/position/rotation)

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Jonas

Emma - I'll echo what @JonasObertuefer said - there is no single "right" way to tackle this. I built out an AR app this summer with a similar approach to what he is describing - its available on Apple's App Store if you want to check it out (HL AR Maps). Its not geo enabled but it could be.  Do you need a 3D model of the building, or simply a popup triggered by their location, what the camera is seeing, or a combination of both? Feel free to reach out to me directly if you need some assistance.  Devin
