So much of our data are in Esri formats (file and enterprise geodatabase) which is not supported by ArcGIS Earth.  In order for that product to be a viable viewer it must support those formats...please.  Also, please don't recommend that my non-expert users go to an AGO or Portal web interface...they are already rejecting those platforms.

Hello Ulf,

Thanks for submitting this idea! Would it be possible to share a high level overview of the data you have in file/enterprise geodatabases, and how you would like to view them in ArcGIS Earth?

In regards to the second half of this idea, it may be more beneficial to separate this out into another idea and expand upon the request. We would like to keep every idea limited to one functional/thematic request for one product, so votes, comments, and implementation do not get lost on all of your suggestions. Please message me if you have concerns or questions on this process.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott, thanks for the reply.

It is very hard for me to describe the exact nature of the data that staff would like to be able to view in an lightweight client GIS.  We have hundreds of different data sets managed by our business clients (I work in IT) that range from sub-regional data that could consist of point, lines and polys in file geodatabases that are "scattered" across our LAN.  We also have more well managed data in IT-managed or business-managed SDEs.  IT managed SDEs typically host continental to global scale data licensed from vendors while business-managed SDE hosts regional business opportunity information which is in a few examples rolled up into global scale data sets.

We have over 900 unique users of ArcGIS Desktop and over 6000 IDs that have accessed maps in Portal, so the user community is large and to characterize all their data would be an impossible task.  This is my way of apologizing for not really answering your question.

With respect to your comment about the second part...I'd day that there really isn't a second part.  It was just an editorial comment meant to impress the fact that Portal-based web maps in their native state are not a viable alternative.  One variable that I did not mention is that the vast majority of our data will likely never be published as web services to a lightweight tool like ArcGIS Earth would come in very handy for none-Desktop experts.

Hope this helps

This is sort of old but I'll lend my voice to it - our office tends to avoid shapefiles because of the various limitations (field/value lengths, date/time storage, no domains/subtypes, etc etc).  So now ArcGIS Earth is getting better, but it does us no good because flat files are not in our workflow and we don't put our working files on Portal.  There is an in-between class of 'working layers' of features stored in FGDB.  Support for FGDB should be common across the entire ArcGIS line of tools.

Supporting file and enterprise GDB would be necessary to use this for basically anything. If you can't add data...

Although it's still the only, the only, Esri product with a table of contents layer list designed correctly. All other platform TOC layer lists (including Pro and Desktop) should copy it. Partial checkbox, turning a sublayer on automatically if parent is off, and shift and ctrl click implemented. (and web maps should also implement these all also).

File Geodatabase file should be supported by ArcGIS Earth. Unless there is a free ESRI product to view file geodatabase file? If not I will have to move to QGIS then I guess

I love ArcGIS Earth but I really can't understand why this isn't supported yet. According to Esri's site, the File Geodatabase "is the recommended native data format for ArcGIS stored and managed in a file system folder." There may be some technical reason that this hasn't been done yet but from a user perspective, the fact that the free viewer app is unable read the recommended format is pretty ridiculous.

I'd also like to tack on support for lyr & lyrx files so that we can author layers in Pro/Map (regardless of data format) and share easily to Earth.

I agree with some of the other comments - the "high level overview" would be ALL OF THE DATA we use - since years ago Esri started encouraging everyone to move away from shapefiles.

DavidWheelock2

Agreed.  "High level overview" means all of our data in SDE.  We need the ability to connect to our geodatabase, browse and add it to a map in Earth.

Bump... Esri, any update on this?

CarolineLindhe

I agree. ArcGIS Earth should be able to add feature classes from file geodatabases!
