AGX Desktop crashes with SDE direct connect data (fine through service)

We're using AGX 1700 with the data expansion pack and have consistently had it crash when we bring up layer files connecting to ArcSDE data through a direct connection. Otherwise identical layer files connecting through a service (port 5151) work flawlessly. We'd much prefer to use direct connects because they're quicker to initiate. Anyone else run into this or have any ideas how to get direct connects working?

Still looking for help on this...the performance of the connections through services is disappointing and we'd really like to avoid having to maintain two sets of layer files (direct connects for ArcMap and service connects for AGX).

I did take a look at it some time ago, and I noticed the issue existed prior to 1700 release. One of the SDE dlls (not part of ArcGIS build) throws an exception. Unfortunately, I could not figure out the issue at that time. will need to look at it in the future.

Thanks for the reply, Andriy. With ESRI recommending direct connects and ArcGIS Explorer as our users' main way to access our data, it would be really great to get this fixed.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the problem doesn't seem to have been fixed by build 1750. I did a fresh install and it crashes in exactly the same manner.

Unfortunately this was not fixed with build 1750. It actually seems to be worse with direct connections. Using services, some layers actually don't even display. There appears to be some arbitrary limit on the number of layers but who knows what that is.
