We have recently changed to Explorer Desktop from ArcReader. I was wondering if there is a way to use the find tool to search the layers and not just the basemap? I made layer packages from ArcGIS 10 and added them to the other machines in the office. They are able to see the data if they click on a feature but they cannot search. For example, we will locate a person's property by typing their name into the find tool and it searches the parcel data layer. Any ideas?
Thanks,

It can be done by creating an add-in (vb.net). I have done so but the code is specific to my application so it will not be useful to share the entire add in. If you would like to see some of the code I would be happy to share.

Brian,
Thanks for the information. I think that may be over my skill level. Thank you for your reply and offer to share.

I can't believe this is not talked about more.  This seems like a very basic feature to have in Explorer.  I went ahead and posted it as an idea here:

I could not come up with any info on this after searching the entire site so decided to post.

I've noticed an issue with the find tool.  I'm using the 1700 build.  If a search is not found, the find tool will sort of hang and slow everything down until the ArcGis Explorer is restarted.  Anyone else have this issue?  Ive tested it on multiple computers and it's the same on all.

Find in 1700, keeps "looking" when there is nothing to find.  This problem is fixed in the next release (1750).  Fixes to a couple other issues are on-going, but we anticipate a 1750 release within the next 3 weeks.

Right on Mark.  Thanks for letting us know. We are going to be rolling the viewer out on about 60 computers in our Division so it sounds like I should wait for the 1750 release to do so after testing to save myself some user headache

Thanks again. 🙂

Oops, That link didn't seem to work.  Here is the one that does.  Please vote to have the Explorer Desktop team implement this function https://c.na1.visual.force.com/apex/ideaView?id=08730000000bqDXAAY

I was having that problem. It only occurred when I entered the coordinates without a comma separating latitude and longitude, e.g., N47 23.786 W93 36.889. Build 1500 accepted coordinates in this format. So does Google Earth. Build 1700 does not. It requires the separating comma, e.g., N47 23.786, W93 36.889.

Will be fixed or will this restriction will be maintained? Is the use of the comma the "correct" form and its absence incorrect or sloppy?
