The new build, 2500, seems to not want to show any basemaps in the basemap gallery. I am aware of the previous bug and thread, and have tried deleting the cache both manually and through the "Explorer Options" menu, but still cannot get the basemaps to show. I uninstalled and reinstalled the new build as well. I did have AGX build 1750 prior to this, but made sure to uninstall everything. I even went into the basemaps folder in the default install location, and was able to open individual .nmf maps containing the different basemaps (except for Bing - I guess these are now "purchase" only basemaps). In addition, the new "Layers" button only shows a blank palette when clicked, with "Loading" being shown, but seems to never load. Not even sure what is supposed to appear with this layers button.  Any advice?   Thanks -Eric

When you used this URL.
http://www.arcgis.com/sharing/conten...800292340/data

and NMF file was downloaded and you were able to open view the data.
This shows that you have access to the ArcGIS online site and you have access to http://services.arcgisonline.com/arc...gery/MapServer  (this url does not work in a browser, and that's fine, the ArcGIS software knows what to do with it).

The http://ago-item-storage.s3.amazonaws.com url does not specifically work in a browser either, but you do need access to this site,  if the location is blocked by a proxy server you will see the error that you sent.

The ArcGIS Explorer desktop basemaps are shared with everyone, you do not need an ArcGIS online account to see and use them.

With some internal support I was able to resolve the base map access issue.  I'm now able to switch between base maps.  ArcExplorer was not passing user credentials to the proxy server.  Allowances had to be made to pass requests anonymously to the following:

*.arcgis.com
*.arcgisonline.com
*.amazonaws.com

However when I sign into ArcGIS online and have set an organization site data source to add our own map services, the basemap picker is empty.  I'm guessing it assumes that any AGOL service already has a basemap?   What if I have data from the service that I want to display on a different basemap in ArcExplorer?

You will need to update the basemap gallery for your organization on ArcGIS online.

The ArcGIS Explorer help topic for that is located here: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/2500//en/ArcGIS_online_organizations.htm#

Hi. I just found this thread and can confirm that, without a ESRI account (free or paid) I'm not getting a basemap selection. It's no problem for me in that I just sign in with my account. I was helping a friend through the same problem and, even with a new account, he's not getting Basemaps. Likely to do with being behind a firewall. Another solution is to go to the ArcGIS Server:

In ArcGIS Explorer, go to Add Content ==> Choose GIS Services ==> Server Type stays as ArcGIS Server ==> in the server box, paste in http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services; don't worry about username or password ==> Next. Choose your map from the list then Add Service.

That choice will now always appear when you Choose GIS Services. Just Highlight it under Select a Service and click Next.  Also, you get more map choices with a direct connection to their map server.
