Dear ESRI:

We have been evaluating AGOL for organizations for a large scale deployment, and while we are largely pleased with the platform, we have encountered tremendous hurdles uploading [moderately large 2-5GB] tile packages over the last 2 weeks. I have observed very weird behaviour in different techniques tried to accomplish this.

<<< I have disabled SSL access to our org account. >>>

- I have tried to upload the tile packages through the "share package" tool in both ArcGIS 10.0 and 10.1. While the tool took long to run, and even displayed a message of successful completion on several occasions, the tile packages never showed under "my content" in AGOL. (I have even done a capture of the network traffic when uploading by this tool, and I even get an item ID, which later on cannot be located by any means on AGOL). -- A note on this, it would be really helpful if you indicated somewhere clearly that the web UI does not allow the uploading of files >256MB by "add content" --.

- I am trying to upload the package through the "file > share > tile package" tool and I'm obtaining extremely slow upload speed. (see attachment). I should clarify I can simultaneously achieve upload speeds of >300kbps to other sites, so it's not a problem with my connection, and I doubt my ISP would cap uploads to Amazon cloud.

Is there some sort of speed cap for a trial account? We are only using 0.3 GB in Tiles currently and have plenty of credits on the account.

I have the suspicion that perhaps our content's database (if such a thing exists) has been corrupted, as the tiles of one of our custom base maps disappeared and we don't recall deleting it ourselves.

Your support would be highly appreciated!!

Thank you in advance;

I have the similar problem. I wanted upload .tpk about 380 MB. When I was uploading data from ArcMap 10.2. (throught Share As - Map Package) I have the speed of uploading about 53 kbps and final result is "The package upload failed. Make sure you are connected to the internet and have space in your online account." And when I tried upload another (108 MB) .tpk through IE 10, the result is "Unable to load https:/... addItem status: 0"
Thank you for answer.

When I used ArcToolbox and function Share Package, after 20 minutes I see following:

Shortly after posting the original post, my fate was exactly the same "The package upload failed.. make sure you're connected to the internet..."

However, I've never got that "not signed in to ArcGIS Online" error. Make sure you're entering your password (allthough you did connect at some point, as the tool, pulled your groups from AGOL.

One error I did get in my first failed attempts at using the "share package" tool, was something along the lines of "you don't have enough space left on your account" or "your account doesn't allow for this operation" or both together; I don't recall and unfortunately didn't capture it, but I only got it a few times at the beginning. After that, as shown on my results screen shot, the transfer proceeded and even "completed successfully" after a reasonable long time (slow upload perhaps), not reporting any error, only not to have the .tpk show under my contents in AGOL.

I'm hoping to gain insights from ESRI technical support.

I'm having trouble with uploading files. I tried to upload a few .tpk files. I uploaded the file size of 2 and 90 MB. I do not upload but the file size of 190 MB. The error message is displayed, the file can not be uploaded. I use IE 10, Windows 7, ArcMap version 10.2 and I am not an administrator in organization.

Hi,

Sorry to jump in with a "me too", but I'm having very similar issues. I stumbled upon the 256Mb limit trying to upload a 3Gb tile package.  I tried the "Share Package" GP tool.  Curiously, it completes without complaint in about 45 minutes, however, the resulting package is nowhere to be found on my account - no errors, no messages, nothing.

(As an aside, I think the slow "Share" speed - compared to bandwidth speed - is due to the fact that the "Share package" tool is supposed to break up the package and reassemble it)

I'm just evaluating ArcGIS Online with the free 50 credit developer subscription, and wonder if there is a storage limit.  Can't find anything online to say anything other than it'll use up credits.

So - question is - am I hitting a storage limit on the freebee account? Or does ArcGIS Online just not handle big tile packages (if so, I can't see a use case for a small tile package!)?

This is a good post to read:

http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/78228-TILE-MAP-PACKAGE-TO-ARCGIS-ONLINE-DOES-NOT-WORK?highlight=til...

The heart of the issue is that the ability to upload the package heavily depends on how you are uploading it.

I have custom code that I wrote which breaks up tile packages into chunks, uploads them, and then asks ArcGIS Online to combine them.  That works well for tile packages which are several GB.

The other factors in play is your upload bandwidth/through-put, Internet traffic, and the performance of Amazon/ArcGIS Online.  The APIs which are used to perform the uploads have timeout values because it is not possible for them to know the difference between no connectivity and slow connectivity.

Best of luck!

I have found that bandwidth or lack of it, is a problem at my office when uploading large data chunks to AGOL either directly from ArcMap or the browser.
I upload first thing in the mornings when updating before my co-workers start sucking bandwidth, it seems to work so far.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.  The only thing I have found that works is to run through the "Share As -> Tile Package" process.  This is a bit of a pain as you have to regenerate the entire set of tiles as well as package, upload and un-pack.  So, the entire process takes the better part of a day. Granted, it does it all for me in one step, but since the tile package already exists, I'm adding 8 to 10 hours to the process that is redundant.

Nothing I have tried vis-à-vis publishing an existing tile package seems to work (GP Tool, browser upload).  All error messages seem to be cryptic, but the feedback I'm getting from the forum is it's timeouts and bandwidth.  I'm working from a home office with dedicated 7Mbs upload. Curious the "full" process works, but if I try to publish an existing tile package it fails.
