We are currently trialling ArcGIS online.
At the moment we are unable (or don't know how) to upload raster datasets (recent aerial photos we have had flown).
We have tried sharing as a service from ArcMap 10.1 which gives us a service definition & shows in 'my content' but when we try to publish the dialog 'You do not have permissions to use this resource' appears.
Do we need ArcGIS  server to publish this service?

Any help greatly appreciated.

You can publish a hosted tiled map service from your data by authoring a map in ArcGIS Desktop.

Sign in to arcgis online from desktop (File menu)
Author your map
Choose the File menu > Share as a service
Choose my hosted services and step through the wizard.
You will want to greatly restrict the number of scales you build tiles for, otherwise you'll use up all your free credits.

Another option would be to create a tile package and upload it to arcgis online. There is a Geoprocessing tool to do so. Once uploaded, you can create a service from it. This will save you the credits for building the cache in ArcGIS Online.

You'll probably need to read some documentation, but this gives you a start.

Good luck,

Mike

As Mike mentioned,
Creating the tile package might be another option that you want to explore. Here is the link on how to do that:

The issue Gazzzzza68 and I had was not being able to publish tile packages from the organisation account. I found the links below and have subsequently removed the SSL security on our organisation account. All works fine now. Also, we were having trouble adding ArcGIS Server web services (I could on a personal account, but not on my organisation account). Changing the SSL security also solved this.

Stating in the ArcGIS Online (for organisations) setup that applying SSL security will restrict functionality would be a huge help!

You shouldn't have to remove SSL. Were you publishing from ArcGIS Desktop initially? It seems so.

Hi Mike,

I'm not sure what the initial problem was with publishing (from ArcMap) services and tile packages to ArcGIS Online. It seems to all work with and without SSL enabled now. However if SSL is enabled I'm still having problems bringing in map services (such as http://maps.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/ArcGIS/rest/services/Aerials/MapServer), no problem at all if SSL is disabled. I have been using Chrome so I decided to give Firefox a go.. and it works. Any idea what would be causing this?

Thanks,

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

When you have SSL Enabled for the Organization, you need to add your services as https. Please try to register the following service.
