There are persistent reports of many people having major performance issues with ArcGIS 10 desktop on hardware configurations that meet and beat the recommended specifications, some of them by a fair margin. Please fix quickly. We want to take advantage of the new features but the serious slow down in basic activities like editing means we are paying a serious tax in terms of our time.

Please see http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/8386-Desktop-ArcGIS-10-Really-Slow for more info.

thank you.

Yes, and while they're at it, add some TLC to the forums server. It's ridiculously slow.

Please fix performance; opening simple MXDs (less than 5 feature classes) takes WAY too long.

ArcMap and ArcCatalog crash whilst carrying out simple tasks and functions. Takes several minutes for ArcCatalog to open.

I did not notice the lag, crash, freezing issues described here with Arc 10 until I upgraded to Arc 10.1.  The constant crashing has rendered this software practically useless.  My day is now organized by what I can do while I wait for ArcGIS to open, load, or display something after I click on a button, tab, or activate a layer.

When I click the ADD layer button, it takes for ever.

ArcGIS 10.1 is slow. The Add data dialog comes up after a long time. The export to PDF also takes a long time.

I have been using ESRI software since Arc/Info 5 and I have always found the ESRI technology to be superior. Unfortunately my commitment is now yielding a lot of frustration.

As an illustration of inacceptable performance, with a fresh install of ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 on a Dell Precision M4400, it takes about 3 min to open ArcCatalog. Initializing Arcpy (lauching the script and waiting for it to execute the first line) on the same machine takes also 2 min. And this is after turning off the completely unnecessary automatic connection to ArcGIS Online.

Organizations are using GIS to meet their mandates within a budget, they cannot afford to have their GIS staff wasting many hours per week while using (very) expensive software that does not perform. Tools like ArcGIS are supposed to increase productivity, not hinder it.

With each releases of ArcGIS Desktop, the performance is becoming worse and worse.
In my opinion, ArcGIS 9.3.1 was the last release that made some sense. Since the 10 release, a lot of fancy features have been introduced but the basics seem completely forgotten. I guess your engineers are generally too young to know or remember about the stellar performance of Arc, Arcplot, and Arcedit. With crude AMLs and Coverages, we could achieve 10 times the amount of processing as compared with what we can do now with 10 times more powerful hardware. How can this be?

Did ESRI lose sight of what the majority of their install base needs to favour features that only appeal to a minority? Change is only beneficial if what worked well before remains. In my opinion, this is no longer the case with ESRI software. Can serious consideration be given to the performance issues? ArcGIS 10.1 SP1 did not do that. So when?

I have been testing ArcMap 10.1 SP1 desktop and like alot of the posters i have been experiencing performance issues.

I am testing this on a PC with Windows XP.

Are any of you using Windows XP Operating System?

As this is what my Organisations IT Department has advised is causing the performance issues.

10.1 is dramatically SLOWER than 10.0. I wish I could go back to a previous version.

Definitely this needs to be resolved some patch/pack etc.
