What follows is a suggestion to improve ArcGIS software by making metadata more easily accessible and easier to create.
While viewing a table for a feature class in ArcMap or ArcCatalog, add the ability to right-click on a field header to “Add/View Field Description.” This would read the existing field description in the xml metadata file for the feature class and allow for updates. The updates would be automatically saved to the xml metadata file.
I believe that this would help technicians more easily create metadata within their existing workflows. Additionally, it would allow users to quickly access the information pertaining to any particular field of interest.
