ArcGIS Pro: The “Grid Index Features” tool fails and ends up with an error,

I couldn’t figure out why the “Grid Index Features” tool fails and ends up with an error. With same inputs, this tool works fine in ArcMap

What could be the issue here?

The tools worked... but it was empty, hence the warning...

Did you specify the coordinate system in the Environments tab for the tool?

Grid Index Features—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation

For best results, all input feature layers and feature classes should be in the same coordinate system as the map or map frame, or if you are using the tool outside of an ArcGIS Pro session, all input feature layers and feature classes should be in the same coordinate system as the first input feature layer or feature class in the list.

Thanks Dan.

Correct. It is coordinate system issue. I set the Map and Layer to be with same coordinate system and it works fine

That is by design, the tool now requires that they be known and the same as indicated in the help topic post.  This is to avoid project-on-the-fly dealings I suspect
