How to edit content in USGS klm files (geologic maps)?

I add geologic maps for individual states as klm files downloaded from the USGS website using the "Add Data" icon.

The imported klm files show in the CONTENTS panel under a single line e.g.: "Geologic Units of Maine", with dozens of geologic units listed individually underneath. The individual units show as polygons on the map. I need to change the symbology (color, pattern, etc.) of individual geologic units in the content panel and map.

Please advise,

If you are getting KML image files, they are images of the maps.  If you want to change the symbology of different units, download the geodatabase or shapefile versions and the CSV tables of attributes.

You can also use KML to Layer to make them usable.
