In the new ArcGIS viewer for Flex, I am unable to add Bing base maps; they are not visible in the list (I added the Bing key under settings). Any clue why it is missing?

I can still use an old app template which has bing base maps added, but not able to add to a new template.

Thanks

I noticed this as well.  This post comes from ArcGISOnline resources section but probably applies to any of the online basemap accessing application builders out there.

"Complimentary use of Bing Maps has been phased out??Organizational account users can continue adding Bing Maps to their web maps if their organization is configured with a Bing Maps key.

To obtain a Bing Maps key, visit the Bing Maps Account Center. If you have questions about using Bing Maps with ArcGIS Online, contact your account manager or local Esri office.

Once you have key, see Configuring the map for instructions on how to input the key.

Once your organization is configured for Bing Maps, you can add Bing basemaps to your web map.

Public account users can no longer use Bing Maps. For all accounts, web maps that already include Bing Maps will continue to function."

You should have received an email from ESRI over a month ago talking about this. BING got their undies in a bunch about so many people using their maps and them not getting recognized.

What you need to do is get a BING Key from BING.

We got one for our ArcGIS Online application we are back up and running.

Robert:

Can you explain in detail how you were able to get the Bing key from Microsoft?  My organization has tried to get in touch with Microsoft about purchasing the key (for over a month), but no dice.

A direct line phone number or E-mail to a support person at Microsoft would be great to get around the bureaucracy of such a large organization.

They won't start giving out keys until 10.2 is released, and then you have to have licenses(?).

For now, you can do this:

1) Go to www.arcgis.com and sign in
2) Browse for 'base map'
3) Choose the Bing Maps Aerial one by clicking on the name of it
4) Click the Open drop down and choose Open in ArcGIS for Desktop

I saved it as a layer file after that.

Also, see this thread:

You can get the key right online when using ArcGIS online.

We requested it and got it in short order.

Now when we go to add layer from Web it is there.

When creating and setting up or ArcGIS Online account for our new online clients 3 weeks ago it was a visible option for us.

Can you explain in detail how ... to get the Bing key from Microsoft?

"you can obtain one by visiting the Bing Maps Account Center or by viewing Getting a Bing Maps Key on the MSDN website. "

For clarification: I am using the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex - Application Builder 3.2. As mentioned in the replies, I have tried with a new Bing key, but still unable to see the Bing layers under basemaps. Does this mean that due to the changes in arcgis online t&c recently introduced, a public user will not be able to use the bing base maps, even if they have bing key?

Thanks for responses!
