Hi,

Is your data in a personal or file geodatabase? The 'Export shapefile symbology for ArcPad' will only work with shapefiles and not geodatabase feature classes. You might want to review the ArcPad Help documentation for 'Export Referenced Style(s) for ArcPad' on ArcPad Resource Center site. I have included URLs below for your convenience.

If you still encounter challenges after reviewing above documentation and current on ArcPad maintenance, please log a support question via Esri Support Services. We now have Phone, Email, Webform, and Chat options to get you connected with ArcPad specialist to help troubleshoot your support incident.

That doesnt seem to be the problem, because it does export certain symbology in a gdb but not others. I think it might have to do with my trimble juno not having the esri fonts installed but I cant see where to put these in the juno like I did in my old dell axim - any ideas?

Hello,

If your symbology isn't coming across to ArcPad correctly (shows as # or something similar) than you're right, you're probably missing that particular font on the mobile device.

Follow these steps to identify the font and copy it to your mobile device:

1. Identify which font the symbol comes from. To do this, open the MXD which contains the symbology. In the Table of Contents, left-click on the symbol itself to open the Symbol Selector. Click on the Edit Symbol button. This will open the Symbol Property Editor which should list the font that this symbol resides in (such as esri_150.ttf).
2. Locate and copy the font. In Windows Explorer, navigate to... C:\WINDOWS\fonts. You should find the font in this location. Please note that the actual filename of the font is different than the font Name. Select the font by left-clicking it once. Copying the font must be done by going to the Edit Menu > Copy.
3. Paste the font into the font directory on the mobile device. This should be located at... \Windows\fonts.

Hope this helps.

Simarly, I'm finding the same thing with labelling in ArcPad 10.

I've set some label parameters for a Polygon shapefile (remove duplicates / keep labels within the polygon) which represent perfectly in ArcGIS but when the file is exported into ArcPad, the symbology works fine but the labelling isn't honored.

Further to this issue:

I have set some symbology for some polygon layers within ArcMap (9.3.1) and used the ArcPad Data Manager to get data for ArcPad. The symbology is only being partly honored and represented within ArcPad 10.2.

I've tried changing symobology levels and other variations but nothing seems to make a difference - a bug perhaps??

There is an issue with ArcPad 10 SP2 and features symbolized by Unique Category symbology.

CQ00312944: Null values in an AXF with string field used for unique category symbology cause ArcPad 10.0 SP2 map frame to freeze

I've witnessed other behavior in addition to the freezing as well.  A pretty common issue is that if you have any NULL records in the field of which the feature class is being symbolized by unique category some or all of the categories will not display in ArcPad.  No freezing (most of the time) but the features just don't come across.

This bug has a resolution planned to be included in ArcPad 10 SP3.

The workaround at this point would be to utilize the field calculator to set all of the NULL values to an actual value of some sort, such as 0, and then check out your data.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the update. I think my issue may be related but not this issue specifically as I'm not exporting to .AXF (working in shapefiles) and my unique category for symbology doesn't contain any NULL values - the category is an ID Field so everything has a value.

Also, my map frame is not freezing it's just not representing as intended. I've further discovered that when I turn off some of the geographically larger symbols off, the smaller one's come on and represent correctly. It appears to be more of a case of ArcPad not honoring symbol levels as set up in ArcGIS.

Regards
Stuart

Stuart,

Are you current on your maintenance for ArcPad support?  If you are, I would suggest logging a support request on this one.  We'd be happy to take a look at your data and dig into this deeper.

An on going issue... I seem to have narrowed it down to symbology exported from a layer with symbology defined by quantities (numbers) and graduated colors. It did work in prevous versions of Arcpad because I have apls that display properly and I am now working around this defect by copying the symbology from the older apl and using it in my new apls - its a pain though
