Can you have a projected coordinate system with WGS84 datum?

Ok I am trying to wrap my head around one of the comments from my advisors on my thesis proposal. I note that all of my analysis are being done in the WGS84 coordinate system to ensure there’s no offset between images (I’m looking at both google earth imagery and another private sources imagery that are in WGS84). My advisors comment:

“This is the datum, but what is the projection? UTM?”.

I’m quite confused. Can and should I also have a projection in my project? I’m not sure how to set both a geographic and projected coordinate system?
