I just got ArcGIS v.10 and am attempting to edit in it for the first time.  I want to create a new feature within an existing shapefile.  Do I have to create a template? It doesnt show any of the drawing tools that I would normally use and it brings up the template box.  In our corporate 'Intro to Arc10' class no one showed us this feature or mentioned that editing had changed to such an extent...

You have to create a new template to create features

This page should get you going.  If feature templates aren't created automatically when you first start an edit session, you'll have to create them manually.  At 10.1, they will always be created automatically.
