Issue When Loading LiDAR Grids to Raster Catalog

Hi,

I've recently inherited a project that involves working with thousands of LiDAR tiles in .asc format. To make these more manageable, I have created several geodatabases and in each of these I have created Raster Catalogs and Raster Datasets. However I have come across an inconsistency, which I cannot decipher if it is an oversight in my methodology or if I'm doing something completely wrong.

Often, when I load individual .asc tiles into ArcMap, the elevation displays fine. When I upload the same tile into a raster catalog (along with others using the Workspace to Raster Catalog tool), then display the Raster Catalog, the whole tile(s) display as NODATA. It is as if the raster values were not uploaded into the Raster Catalog. Another complexity is for some catalogs and datasets this hasn't happened, and the rasters display fine.

Oh, and I cannot use 3D Analyst...it's being purchased as we speak.

Any help you could provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DK

Hi DK,

Did you build statistics on the ASC files?  You can check by right-clicking on the file in ArcCatalog/Catalog Window > Properties.
