I would like to create a shapefile containing the bounding box for a tif raster file.
I'm new at this and am looking for the simplest, accurate way to do this.

I was given a NLCD file and want to draw a border around the entire image to define my area of interest.
I know I can draw a polygon by hand, but with all the available tools, I would think there was one to do this.

I did a google search for "ArcGIS 10 create raster from polygon" and came upon this: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//001200000008000000

I thin that's the tool you are looking for.  Post back if I missed your question...

Hope this helps!

Hi George,

The Raster to Polygon tool will work as Joshua pointed out, but each cell will be converted to a polygon.  I would recommend using the Create Fishnet tool.  For the Template Extent parameter, specify the raster.  Then specify:

Cell Size Width:  0
Cell Size Height:  0
Number of Rows:  1
Number of Columns:  1

And POLYGON for the output type.

Also, if you have the 3D Analyst extension you could use the Raster Domain tool.
