Could somebody refer me a book on building geoportal,SDI and GIS data sharing in organisations. I want a book that generally discusses about the architecture and design. I  want one book which is not specific to one product or GIS software. I want to understand what geoportals are. I also want a specific one that discusses building geoportals using the Arc platform.

My second question is about spatial servers(I was not sure where to post it). What are spatial servers? What is their use? Where do they exist in a typical GIS system's architecture(between database server and application server?) Are they the same as auxiliary (proxy) server which are used for caching purpose? How are they configured?

Thanks.

I would recommend this book from Esri Press:  http://esripress.esri.com/display/index.cfm?fuseaction=display&websiteID=141

Also, check out the white paper and training on GIS System Design Strategies:  http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/whitepapers/view/productid/19/metaid/1022

Lastly, the GSDI cookbook has some good content (although it is getting a little "long in the tooth"):  http://www.gsdi.org/gsdicookbookindex

Thanks for your reply. Hope my questions about the spatial servers are addressed there as well.
