If you’ve adopted GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1, the instructor resources are here! Read on to learn more about these resources from the authors, Wilpen L. Gorr and Kristen S. Kurland.

gist-pro-3-1-instructor-resources-spotlight.pngWe are award-winning professors at Carnegie Mellon University who have been writing GIS textbooks and teaching GIS for over 25 years. Besides developing our own textbook writing skills, we have learned much from our students’ feedback, suggestions from GIS instructors around the world, and from CMU’s Teaching Excellence & Educational Innovation Center.

GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1 is our introductory GIS textbook with step-by-step tutorials for ArcGIS Pro, and it’s our job to help get those materials to stick and integrate. To that end, we have several innovative features in our materials.

  • First, each lecture starts with a “map” of the whole course, showing what you will learn today and how it is related to other parts of the course. Getting the big picture is really important for learning.
  • Next, we keep our hands-on tutorial exercises short, on one topic at a time with at most 10 steps each. Such “chunks” are best for learning and provide a sense of accomplishment.
  • Fairly often, we include “Your Turn” assignments that have you repeat steps just taken, but in slightly modified ways or with new data. Repetition with Your Turns starts the internalization process.
  • Then we provide end-of-chapter assignments, available for download. These assignments have students apply materials presented in a chapter with new datasets and problem areas, to take them further along the path to retaining and integrating workflows and tool use.
  • We always end our classes with a GIS project assignment of students’ own designs. That all makes GIS work and stick.

Besides classroom teaching, we also teach GIS courses online, and so have prepared video lectures, keyed to GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1. So it’s like sitting in our class to learn underlying GIS concepts, workflows, analyses, and applications. Once updated, these videos will be available upon request after the start of the Fall term.

Instructors can find the resources, which include assignment solutions and grading rubrics, from Esri Press. We hope that you find these resources helpful in designing your curriculum.

The instructor resources are available through VitalSource. Read this blog to find out how to access these, and be sure to add the e-book from the educator portal to your Bookshelf library.

It does not look like the instructor resources (paperclip) are available on vital source for the GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1.  I was required to order books for fall semester the end of spring semester and 3.1 version was not going to be available by Aug 30, so we had to go with the 2.8 version.  We have decided to allow students to use the 3.1 digital version if they choose, so we need to locate the instructor resources.

thanks you for your help

Hi there,

The instructor resources are there. I'm not sure where you're looking or if you by chance accessed the student version, but it's in the Bookshelf home:

The link on the file will allow for the zip file download. Please let me know if you still have trouble finding it. Thanks!

but my version 2.8 does

I can I tell if my access is a student version vs an instructor version?

I went back through the request process again and it shows I have already been approved as faculty review, but I still do not have access to the instructor material link - thanks for your insights on this

Hi again,

Sorry for the delay. It looks like you're on the right version (see the "Faculty Review" label there), and if you're going to the e-book from this page, I'm not sure what the issue could be. I will send you a DM so we can figure this out. Thanks for your patience!

Sasha, the 3.1 version publications is not scheduled until the end of September, so our University adopted the 2.8 version for class, but are giving the option for those that use the current digital version of 3.1 they can.  So I am wondering if because we adopted the 2.8 version for the course the the 3.1 version of instructor resources are not available.   We are going to adopt the 3.1 version for Spring semester.

Could this be the reason I do not have access to the 3.1 instructor resource.

I will need these resources for grading etc for those students that use the 3.1 version

I really could use some help on this

thanks

Final figuresdout the issue: We officially adopted the the 2.8 version for fall 2023. We then decided as a class to use the digital version of 3.1 but we never had our bookstore alter that we are using the 3.1 version as the required text.  Shortly after 3.1 was designated as the required text for the course the VitalSource Instructor Resource "paperclip" became available.  The key was in the last post comment "If you’ve adopted GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1"  that made us realize we need to have the bookstore alter the status.  Thanks to everyone for leaving helpful hints in how to solve this issue.  We look forward to using the 3.1 version this semester.

The Pittsburgh tracts are available in the instructor package; Assignment 4-1. You can extract the Tracts feature into a folder and provide that to the students.

The dataset for Assignment 4-1 has been updated, thanks for letting us know.

Dear,
I hope this text finds you well.

I'm writing to you today because I'm interested in learning ArcGIS Pro 3.1 and I'm having trouble finding a copy of the GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1 PDF. I've checked with my university library, but they don't have a copy of the book. I've also searched online, but I haven't been able to find a reputable source that offers the PDF for free.

I was wondering if you would be willing to share a copy of the GIS Tutorial for ArcGIS Pro 3.1 PDF with me. I would be very grateful if you could help me out.

I understand that this is a valuable resource, and I would only use it for educational purposes. I would also be happy to return the PDF to you once I'm done with it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Mahbub Hasan

Editors do not have access to test copies other than the copy that is issued to them as GIS instructors. Please contact Esri Press to determine if you are eligible for an instructor copy.

Hi Mahbub,

We don't offer PDF versions of the book, but you can rent or purchase an e-book here.

How to I get a copy of the instructor resources if I am not planning on purchasing the online version through V etextbooks. Our school ordered the physical copies for the students and I also have the physical copy but would like the instructor resources. Thanks!

Hi ALawson,

You can assess most of the teaching materials here: https://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?id=2d667d9cd31245299ad745806100c3b5&view=list#content

When you register with VitalSource for a faculty account you are verified as an instructor, so you also get the answer sheet for the assignments. Since you aren't going that route, can you shoot me an email (ccarpenter@esri.com) from your school email account with your syllabus attached?
