Are you attending a conference soon? If so, take some time to review this guide to get the most out of your conference experience.

Conferences can be overwhelming but also can be very fruitful in making key connections that could be affect your school or career trajectory. 

URISA Vanguard Cabinet and Esri Young Professionals Network  (YPN), teamed up to create a flyer containing tips and tricks to get the most out of your conference experience to maximize growing your network.

 

Networking tips

  • Ask simple questions like: 
    • “Can you tell me a little bit about what your company/organization does?”
    • “Have you been to this conference before?”
  • Share business cards, LinkedIn connections, or other contact info
  • Update your social media profiles

 

Finding opportunities

  • Research organizations in Expo beforehand
  • Have copies of resume ready to share
  • Sign up for the conference apps and job boards
  • Attend networking socials, receptions, and meetups
  • Follow up with the people you spoke to through email/social media

 

Presentation takeaways

  • Take notes during presentations
  • Ask at least one question per session
  • Approach the presenter afterward to share an insightful thought
  • Get presenters’ contact info to reach out later if you found their presentation
    helpful
  • Document projects you’d like to try and plan how you can achieve it

 

Going above and beyond

  • Create a blog post, story, or presentation of your conference experience to share
  • Recap the conference experience in a social media post
  • Submit a paper session to present at a conference
  • Apply to be a conference volunteer

 

Networking pitfalls

  • Focusing too much on self-promotion
  • Failing to listen actively
  • Being too pushy
