separate item detail fields from metadata

We are loving the new metadata editor, but we would like to maintain separation between the fields on the item detail page, and the information provided as part of the metadata.

The item details (summary and description in particular) serve a different purpose for our users, compared to metadata. As an example, we find that maintaining an informal tone in the item details makes content more accessible, particularly for users accessing it via ArcGIS Hub, whereas keeping our metadata more formal ensures that the information is taken seriously, such as citation requirements and use limitations. We would like to tailor our item details on discoverability and tailor our metadata towards the reusability of the data.

At the moment, with the item details information stored as part of the metadata in both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, we are unable to provide two different versions of the description or summary.

Thanks,

Emily

Hi Emily,

Thanks for your input! This is helpful as we consider how to make metadata creation easier, including syncing metadata element values between the item information and formal metadata. I've captured your ideas.

In the meantime, I hope these tips help get you what you need:

1. The item title and title used in the metadata can be different. The metadata title is initially populated with the item title but is not synced (if you change it in the metadata editor, the item title will not be changed). Better yet, you can provide both the friendly title and an alternative title in the metadata Citation that could be a more technical title exposed only in the formal metadata.

In the metadata editor, search "alternative" to jump to this element in the All Metadata tab:

View the results - in the metadata record, both titles are presented:

2. Consider using the Summary to provide a super-friendly description using an informal tone. Use the Description(Abstract) to provide the more detailed technical description of the what, when, where, who, how, and why. In Hub, the Summary will be displayed before the more detailed Description(Abstract). The Summary is what is displayed in gallery cards and web search engine results.
