I am trying to figure out how to add 3rd party applications (ie apps outside AGOL) to the Maps and Apps Gallery

In AGOL from your Content view, pick "+ Add Item" and the drop down option for the item type can be application.  From there you add the appropriate link, marry up the specs about that link. This might help too...

thank you very much, I had no idea you could add external web apps as "content" in AGOL
