PREAMBLE
Terrific resources abound for helping educators learn the fundamentals of ArcGIS Online and teaching with it. Similar to how amusement parks indicate "You must be this tall to get on this ride," T3G in the future will depend on educators building, on their own, the skills for using and teaching with GIS. T3G itself will focus on "the third leg of the stool" -- helping education leaders share these powers with other educators more effectively.

T3G has over 450 alums. "T3G 2017" marks Esri's next step in ramping up GIS education. T3G alums have been pioneers in many areas, and this watershed event is a critical pilot for Esri. Because of ConnectED, T3G2017 will focus just on K12 education, and be available only to T3G alums anxious to provide more effective training to K12 educators. Anyone hoping to "audit" while doing email, grading papers, or barbecuing will need to wait until recordings are posted. Only "full participants" -- those giving evidence of keen interest in helping K12 educators by having met the prerequisites and submitted a complete application -- will be able to participate live. We want to make this event as powerful as possible for attendees. Esri expects to offer "ConnectED Workshop $upport Grants" for K12 educators again in 2017, and will limit eligibility to those who "participated live" in T3G 2017. (T3G alums facing "special circumstances" constraining participation should check with Charlie. We hope folks will attend as many of those 12 hours as possible, but recognize life happens. We encourage everyone to go thru the application process, whether you can attend 12 hours or 12 minutes of T3G2017, to document/test/build your skills and boost eligibility for a $upport Grant.)

T3G 2017 will not be two days of mind-numbing wall watching. Instead, it will feature:
  • two days of 6 hours of content (2hrs, 15min break, 2hrs, 15min break, 2hrs;; 9:00am-3:30pmPDT), Sat April 22 and Sat April 29, 2017
  • frequent synchronous online interaction, using multiple channels (video+audio, chat, polls, simultaneous response to survey items, etc)
  • large group presentations and discussions
  • simultaneous breakouts and discussions
  • guidance on technology, teaching students, and teaching educators
  • models of instruction for teaching with GIS
  • practice in using GIS
  • intros to recent tools and instructional materials from Esri
  • pointers to key resources for building background and skills
  • recorded sessions ((So only those willing to be recorded should apply.))

EXPECTATIONS UPON COMPLETION: We expect that T3Gers will in the next year do all these: (a) Conduct a hands-on training event for at least 5 educators for at least an hour; (b) Conduct an awareness event for at least a dozen educators for at least 30 minutes; (c) Contribute actively to the T3G network (via GeoNet posts or replies, valuable listserv notes, and/or individual peer support).

PREREQUISITES
These items need to be in place at the time of T3G 2017. They should already be standard in the toolkit for T3G alums. Reviewing or filling gaps should take little time for alums who have "kept up," but longer for those with a "pre-2014 mindset." Hoping to breeze through these in a "3-hour cram session in mid-April" won't work. Only those who meet these criteria and complete the application will be ready to go out and help other educators work with the tools of today.

  1. TEACHING WITH GIS COURSE: Applicants must have completed the "Teaching with GIS" course on Esri's Online Training site, http://esriurl.com/vcteachingwithgis. This course was required for application to T3G in 2014, 2015, and 2016, so participants who attended only in 2009-2013 need to complete the course and submit the certificate of completion by email to t3g-institute@esri.com before applying.
  2. GEONET: Applicants must be a member of the "T3G Alums" group on GeoNet, http://geonet.esri.com/groups/t3g. Log into GeoNet, and then request entry to the group if you are not already a member. Applicant profile must show first and last name, have a recognizable "primary profile photo" (i.e. be recognizable despite scale or obscurity in the primary photo that shows when a user who is logged in to GeoNet clicks a person's name or thumbnail; log in and see examples for Laura, Joseph, and Charlie. The application will have a blank for your GeoNet address.
  3. USK12GIS MAP: Applicants must appear in the correct location on Map#5 (T3G map) of  http://esriurl.com/usk12gis, with the "GeoNet" link connecting a user directly to your GeoNet profile. (Contact Charlie with issues.) The application will seek your confirmation that the map and link are A-OK.
  4. T3G AGO ORG LOGIN: Applicants must be able to log into the T3G Org (http://esrit3g.maps.arcgis.com), where we will conduct activities. T3G 2013-16 all did significant work here; alums from 2009-2012 may need to contact Charlie for a login. The application has a blank for your T3G Org username.
  5. PERSONAL/DEVELOPER ACCOUNT LOGIN: Applicants must have and be able to log into your own free "developer account" (https://developers.arcgis.com) or fee-based "personal account" (http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-personal-use). Since each provides an Org limited to 1 login, you are the admin for this Org. Make your Org publicly visible (Settings: "Allow anonymous access to your organization"). The application will seek the URL for your Org.
  6. AGO MAP VIEWER SKILLS: Applicants must know and be comfortable using and teaching the fundamental concepts and skills of ArcGIS Online Map Viewer: ((If you need guidance, see http://k12.maps.arcgis.com, >> "07.PD", >> "01.GettingStarted"))
    • accessing and using existing online maps, scenes, and apps
    • creating, saving, and sharing maps, scenes, and apps
    • pan/zoom; home; bookmark; find location
    • identify; features and attributes; popup customization
    • swapping basemaps; finding and adding data layers
    • layers on/off; scale-dependent visibility; layer sequence; layer transparency
    • table access; table sorting; table column hide/show
    • data classification and symbolization
    • feature selection/query/filter
    • finding, viewing, and creating metadata for layers, maps, apps, and personal profiles.
  7. AGO PLATFORM CONCEPTS: Applicants must be familiar with and be able to talk about the general idea of Esri's technology platform:
    • Esri provides tools and methods for exploring and analyzing data geographically (http://www.esri.com/about-esri)
    • ArcGIS Online is a framework for integrating tools, data, and people (http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis)
    • ArcGIS Online "named user" accounts provide access to specific tools and contents to a specific user across devices (computer, tablet, smartphone)
    • ArcGIS Online Organizations provide a space for working with more tools, apps, and data, and collaborating with customizable communities, sized 1-n.
  8. ONLINE CHECK: T3G 2017 will use Zoom. Invitees will need to check in online with the staff during one of the check-in windows in the ~2 weeks before the event to confirm videoconference capacity.

T3G 2017 APPLICATION HAS 3 PARTS TO BE COMPLETED BY MON MARCH 6 2017, 5pmPT

Part One: required only if you did not attend T3G 2014/2015/2016:
Send email to "t3g-institute@esri.com" attaching certificate of completion for "Teaching With GIS" online course http://esriurl.com/vcteachingwithgis.

Part Two: Use ArcGIS Online to prepare a "finished product." (Show us your grasp of the fundamentals by creating a map, converting it into a presentation, web app, or story map, and share that finished product with the T3G Org, and adding the URL to the proper blank in the application form.
  1. Use your T3G Org login to prep the map and convert into a presentation, web app, or story map.
  2. Save your creation with title "T3G2017 Application <Fname Lname>"
  3. Give your creation a tag of "T3G2017app" (all one word)
  4. On your creation, use a Map Note showing your current work location, with institution, street address, city, state, zip, and website inside the note. (If no current work address, use current home address.)
  5. See http://esriurl.com/funwithgis206. (This is a very carefully scripted activity, with a lot of steps that will take longer to read carefully than to do.) On your creation, add "Roundmile" data for your Map Note from Step#4 above. Do just Phase1+2 of the Roundmile process, thru Step 18. (Do Phase1 steps 1-16 to create the special enriched circle; then catalogue the data as noted in Phase2 steps 17-18.) Do not do Roundmile Phase3 for your T3G map, just make sure that your T3G creation has your special circle, and that it was catalogued as described in Phase2.
  6. Create a table (so it can be classified and appear in a legend) for up to 5 of your most powerful "teacher training events" in which you presented or plan to present GIS to educators since you first attended T3G. The table should include these capitalized items: LAT, LONG, EVENTNAME, YYYYMM (6-digit date), PARTICIPANTS (number of audience participants to whom you presented), and QUICKCOMMENT (max of 5 words). Add the table to your creation, with the layer classified by PARTICIPANTS.
  7. Be sure you have turned your map into a presentation, web app, or story map. Share the finished product with the T3G Org, and use the URL in your application form.

Part Three: Fill out the online application form
  1. Your name
  2. Your email
  3. Your phone
  4. Year(s) you participated in T3G
  5. Content area you deal with in your job ___
  6. Age group you deal with in your job ___
  7. Your job description ____ (<10 words)
  8. Institution Name
  9. Institution City
  10. Institution State/Prov
  11. Institution Country
  12. Institution ZIP/Postal Code
  13. The time zone from which you will participate
  14. T3G Org login
  15. Confirmation that T3G Map (#5 of http://esriurl.com/usk12gis) has proper location and personal GeoNet link
  16. Personal/Developer Org URL (i.e. http://____.maps.arcgis.com)
  17. Address of AGO finished product (shared with T3G Org) submitted: http://____
  18. Confirmation of Teaching With GIS course certificate

The link to the online Teaching with GIS training doesn't look like it is working. Is it just too soon?
