What would you do at the Esri International User Conference if you only had one day there?

Having never been before, I would imagine it would be one jam-packed day

Hang out with the geoprocessing team in the Esri exhibit area!

Depends on what day you were there and if you have been to the Conference before.  There's tons to do - here's the high points (IMHO):

If you are there on Monday, the Plenary Session first thing in the morning is well worth attending for the first few hours.  It's pretty intense to be in a massive conference hall with several thousand GIS folks to hear Jack Dangermond and the ESRI presenters speak.  Also, the Map Gallery Opening is interesting to hit in the late afternoon.

For the most bang for your buck for just one day, however, I'd suggest going on a Tuesday or Wednesday.  First, look at the Technical Workshops once they are out online and pick out a few that sound interesting.  Pick some alternatives for those time blocks too, as some times you can find five minutes in to a session that it is way too elementary or advanced for what you want - if so, just quietly exit and find one of your alternatives.

Second, a zip around the Exhibit area is worth it, if only for the free goodies.  Plan to spend an hour or so doing that.

Third, wander into the ESRI area (also on the Exhibit floor) and hit the various areas that are of interest.  They have plenty of experts in every possible facet of the software there to take questions.  They have computers all set up, so can run you through the software.  It's also a great opportunity to bring up problems, those "Why doesn't this work" things.  If they don't have an immediate solution, they will get back to you within a few days with an answer.  They also take suggestions.

Fourth, the Map Gallery is worth a look over (and will be less crowded than the Opening on Monday).

Finally, don't forget to plan in some time to meet up with people you know who are also there.  It's a great way to catch up, plus you can compare notes on different things you learned.

I wish there were more technical workshops preceding the UC!  For me I'd like to see a full day of SQL Server / SDE on upgrading, what's new, and advanced topics.  Getting to the UC is the hurdle so paying for a targeted workshop wouldn't be a problem.  I think there was only one session during the whole week on SQL / SDE.

Hi Randy!

I've read your comment and I'm following up with our team. We are still working hard on the agenda, but please be assured that we are going to include some great technical sessions so you can learn more about SQL Server-based enterprise geodatabase.

If you are looking for something else, please let me know.

Thank you!

Randy, in the past Microsoft has sponsored a lunch time meeting with typically some good talks on SQL/SDE.  In fact, years ago I was able to gain a contact (Chris from TX, if I remember) and information on (automate) caching large quantities of raster that were stored in SDE.  Of course, much better ways of doing that now with the newer technology, but the talk at the lunchtime user group meeting (open to all at UC) was extremely valuable.  The lunchtime user group meetings are usually Tues or Weds and will be listed in the agenda, if not already.

Also, although probably not listed yet, there are usually shorter sessions in the "Demo theaters" and if you have specific questions, don't forget that there are a boatload of tech support staff at the conference that can sit down one-to-one and answer questions.

Pre-planning a UC is key to get the most out of it.  Have plans, alternate plans and be flexible (in case needs change or you get side-tracked), but also have your must-see list.  Also, for real popular sessions....get there early for a good seat!
