Anybody in the group involved in desertification/land degradation risk assessment mapping with ArcGIS? What programs, data collection tools and procedures did you use?

Actually I'm really interested in this field and I need to know more about integration between this topic and GIS? How we can use GIS and which tools we can use it to apply and generate and analyze any useful data?
I did my PhD on desertification in Morocco, I used MEDALUS model for mapping desertification, I used ArcGis for estimating different factors, and also Erdas Imagine for remote sensing
